JDA Announces Guitar Center’s Mark Laughlin as Winner of Executive Technology Magazine’s CIO/IT Leadership Award

JDA Nominated Winner Based on His Leadership and Successful Alignment of IT with Company’s Aggressive Growth Objectives

Scottsdale, Ariz. - June 5, 2003 -Mark Laughlin, executive vice president and CIO of Guitar Center, a JDA® Software Group Inc. client, was named a winner of Executive Technology magazine’s 2003 CIO/IT Leadership Awards. Laughlin received the award, which honors the most innovative and industry-leading CIOs and senior IT executives in retail, for his success in tying innovation to business payback and his outstanding ability to envision and execute an integrated IT and retail business environment at Guitar Center.

At the heart of Guitar Center’s IT infrastructure are multiple JDA Portfolio® applications that have enabled the nation’s leading retailer of guitars, amplifiers, percussion instruments, keyboards and pro-audio and recording equipment to grow from $60 million to $1.1 billion in just over a decade. Additionally, Guitar Center expanded from a ten-store chain to a 113-store specialty retailer credited with cultivating the Musical Instrument Market across the country.

“During a period of immense company growth, Mark demonstrated remarkable foresight, leadership skills and savvy in harnessing the power of IT for the best possible benefits for Guitar Center,” stated Marc Millstein, editor-in-chief at Executive Technology. “Executive Technology salutes him for his outstanding achievements.”

“With market-leading software such as JDA Portfolio, we’ve created a superior technology infrastructure. However, our success is due to more than just technology. If not implemented properly, a really good piece of technology will fall flat. It’s the people, processes and organization surrounding the implementation that drives our success,” commented Laughlin. “On behalf of Guitar Center, I am honored to accept this award.”

Integrated Portfolio Solutions Support Guitar Center’s Growth and Prosperity
According to Laughlin, JDA Portfolio Merchandise Management System-i ™ (MMS®) played a pivotal role in Guitar Center’s 1997 transformation into a publicly traded company. Since integrating MMS with other proven Portfolio applications, including Arthur Planning™, Advanced Allocation™ and Arthur Knowledge Base™, Laughlin says that Guitar Center continues to increase its presence as the number one music retailer in strategic markets across the United States.

“The implementation of a best-of-breed retail management system was absolutely critical to our business,” stated Laughlin. “With the support of Portfolio applications, we continue to successfully buy and integrate new businesses, open new stores and gain market share over our competitors.”

Commenting on Laughlin’s achievements, JDA CEO Jim Armstrong remarked, “Our successful long-term partnership with Guitar Center represents a key philosophy of our Customer Value Program: for us to act as a trusted and knowledgeable advisor to our clients so that they can achieve their goals. Having worked closely with Mark and the Guitar Center team since 1995, we are excited to see Mark recognized for his instrumental role in Guitar Center’s monumental financial growth and continued success. He’s a model industry leader, admired by many.”

Executive Technology will present the CIO/IT Leadership Award to Laughlin during an awards dinner on Monday, June 9, 2003 at the Retail Systems/VICS Collaborative Commerce Conference & Exposition in Chicago, Ill.
