Imtech: 100 million euro for technology at Gazprom Arena

Gouda, (PresseBox) - Imtech (technical services provider in Europe) has received for the basic technical infrastructure of the Gazprom Arena, which will be constructed in Saint Petersburg. The contract is worth over 100 million euro.

Scope of the assignment

The basic technical infrastructure comprises all solutions in the fields of heating, climate control, electrical engineering, instrumentation, security, fire prevention, fire detection and extinguishing solutions. The order will be carried out and co-ordinated by Imtech Deutschland. Imtech is currently in consultations with Gazprom about additional technological solutions in the arena, including high-tech facilities for energy management and comfort. Imtech will start activities towards the end of 2008 and the stadium is scheduled for completion in September 2010.

Gazprom Arena: a high-tech stadium

The Gazprom Arena is to become Russia's most modern multifunctional sports arena, with a sliding roof and a retractable field. The new stadium will serve as home base for FC Zenit, the current Russian football champion and winner of the UEFA Cup 2008. Dutch football coach, Dick Advocaat, manages FC Zenit. The stadium will have a total capacity of almost 62,000 seats (covered). Despite the fact that temperatures in Saint Petersburg are average minus 30 degrees Celsius, the atmosphere in the stadium will always be comfortable. In the event of a fire, an innovative smoke extraction system will guarantee the safety of the spectators. The technology of Imtech will guarantee the use of most energy-efficient solutions.

Role of Imtech's own R&D centre

Imtech's R&D centre in Hamburg is playing an important role in arriving at the correct decisions about the technology to be used at the new arena. This centre is a leading research institute that develops, tests and optimises technical solutions. It specialises in research and development activities where energy and safety meet. From large-scale test models (scale 1:22) to complex software-based simulations in the fields of energy and airflow, heating and cooling, ensuring that the best climate and safety conditions (in case of fire, for example) will be implemented. Because of this expertise Imtech was already involved in the engineering phase of the Gazprom Arena in 2007.

Imtech in Eastern Europe

Imtech's strategy is to grow into one of the largest technical services providers in Europe. To that end, it is focusing on further expansion in areas such as Eastern Europe. These development efforts are co-ordinated from Germany, where Imtech is the largest multidisciplinary technical services provider. Imtech has since also secured a strong position on the Polish market and frequently carries out projects in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, many for existing German clients. The first steps towards further expansion in Russia were taken last year. In this regard, Imtech concentrates in particular on special technical projects, such as sports arenas. In light of the long-term order for the Gazprom Arena, Imtech will be opening a branch office in Saint Petersburg.

Years of experience in stadiums

Imtech has many years of technical experience in the realisation of stadiums and sports arenas. Imtech Deutschland, for example, was involved in its capacity as technology partner in the arena of Schalke (Veltins Arena) and the multifunctional ISS Dome, both in Dusseldorf, as well as the SAP Arena in Mannheim. The research efforts of Imtech's R&D centre in Hamburg also played a key role in these assignments. In the UK, Imtech provided an important part of the technology and safety systems at Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium in London.
