IMPERIAL push boats travel to Paraguay

(PresseBox) (Duisburg, ) Two new IMPERIAL push boats set off from Rotterdam for their future area of operations in Paraguay on 13 May this year. The two vessels, "Herkules XVII" and Herkules XVIII", which were built at the Veka shipyard in Werkendam (NL), were loaded on board the heavy-lift vessel "HHL Fremantle", one in the cargo hold and one on deck. The heavy-duty vessel is due to reach its destination, the Uruguayan port of Nueva Palmira, on 2 June. From there, the two push boats will travel under their own power up the Rio Paranà as far as Asuncion in Paraguay. From there, they will help reinforce the shipping services on the Rio Paraguay and Rio Paranà rivers between Corumbá (Brazil) and San Nicolas in Argentina from the autumn of this year onwards. IMPERIAL Shipping Paraguay will have seven push boats, each with twelve barges, operating there by the end of this year. They mainly transport iron ore, agricultural products and other bulk goods over a distance of up to 3,000 km.

IMPERIAL Shipping Paraguay has been operating this service since March 2014. A round trip takes about four weeks. Each push boat with a barge convoy (280 metres long, 50 m wide) can transport up to 36,000 tonnes of goods. The two push boats, which are 43.50 metres long and 17.5 metres wide, feature what is so far a unique innovation for these kinds of vessels. The flanking rudders placed in front of the propeller nozzles in the direction of travel, which are only needed for special manoeuvres, can be completely lowered in the stern using hydraulics during normal transport operations. This provides savings in fuel consumption between 5 and 7,5 percent.
