A platen press, dating from 1962, is already en route for Medellin, Copacabana, Colombia. This press, provided by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), will enable streetkids in the future to learn to print texts developed beforehand in conjunction with local student teachers. Literacy work on the ground is to be stepped up as part of the Patio 13 project.

In December 2001, the Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg and the Escuela Normal Superior María Auxilliadora in Copacabana, Colombia, joined forces with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG to create the innovative international educational initiative "Patio 13 - School for Streetkids". The basis for collaboration is the joint interest in international commitment and cooperation, educational innovation, and literacy.

In the last few weeks, students from the Colombian cooperation partner, the Escuela Normal María Auxiliadora educational institute, who travel each year to Germany on the Baden-Württemberg scholarship, learned how to operate the press at the Heidelberg training center. The platen press, which comes from a print shop in Frankfurt, was first overhauled by Heidelberger trainees in Wiesloch and readied for service. Under the guidance of trainer Peter Kollenz, students Elisabeth Ramirez Rivera, Alejandra Maria Castano Palacio, and Nataly Gomez Müller regarded it as an honor to develop their operating skills on this traditional press. "As soon as we return to Colombia at the start of August, we'll begin work with small groups," explained Elisabeth Ramirez Rivera. The three women from Colombia were delighted with the helpful attitude at Heidelberg and are confident they will be able to contribute to the successful fight against illiteracy.
