"5-axes. Automated. Successful." With this claim, Handtmann A-Punkt Automation GmbH is prepared for EMO 2011 in Hannover to present user-oriented solutions to automate machine processes for an economic production in 5-axis HSC-machining. Exemplary, Handtmann will exhibit the HBZ® CompactCell with an automated system on rails. The machine will run live under production in hall 12, stand A72.

The horizontal machining centre HBZ® CompactCell, which was first displayed at AMB 2010 in Stuttgart, convinces with its compact machine design and its tremendous power. Meanwhile, the machine has been sold several times and also has been further developed. The EMO in Hannover is now stage for the HBZ® CompactCell in combination with the successful automation on rails to be officially presented in public for the first time. Due to a lot of requests from the international markets, the basic concept of the machine has been already further developed accordingly. The HBZ® CompactCell now covers an even broader field of applications with a constant table width of one meter and table lengths in scaling of two, three and four meters.

For Handtmann, the focus of the upcoming EMO is on automation. Especially where an optimal interaction of precision and high power is demanded, Handtmann machining centres are in use. The combination of machining centres from Handtmann and user-oriented automated solutions allows the additional optimization of an economic production because a high store is set on minimizing cost-intensive set-up-times. The result is a considerable reduction of production costs which is a topic with significant increasing importance in all industry sectors. This is why Handtmann is focusing on finding efficient solutions for realizing the huge potentials in savings for customers. Many Handtmann machining centres have already been successfully delivered to customers in combination with efficiency-boosting automated solutions.

"We don't consider ourselves to be a typical manufacturer for special machinery. But anyhow, we adapt our concepts pretty much individually to our customers' needs." This is how Wolfgang Ziemann, sales director of Handtmann A-Punkt Automation GmbH, is reasoning the flexible "building set" in machine conception. At Handtmann, automation already starts with the selection of additional components. See for example a double portal, whose application allows the joint machining of one workpiece or the individual machining of two workpieces on one machine of the Handtmann GANTRY® line simultaneously. Industrial robots are qualified for loading and unloading of workpieces as well as the tool management in all four Handtmann product lines. Especially designed for horizontal machining, the integrated palette changing system is applied in the HBZ® AeroCell® and turns out to be quite successful on the market. The system allows the horizontal machining of large-scale workpieces up to 7x2 meters and setting-up parallel during production. By installing a portal handling system, automatic loading and unloading of the machine from above is done by a robot. Multiple setup stations outside of the machine with a number of palette carriers are increasing the productivity. Handtmann is providing such a portal handling system not only for automating one single machine but also for several machines to create a linkage of machining centres. Especially the product lines PBZ®, UBZ® and HBZ® are predestined for this solution.

With the aim to greatly reduce cost-intensive downtimes, the new HBZ® CompactCell is currently offered with three different systems for automation. Therefore, the stand-alone-concept can be expanded with a supplementary set-up station and a crane is conducting the palette change. For additional automation of this concept, Handtmann offers the automated system on rails. This space-saving, ergonomic and high economic concept has already been sold several times. The third version, the palette rack, is the extension of the system on rails and contains the space-saving storage of multiple pallets in a rack in front of the machine. The automated solutions can be adapted individually to the two, three and four-meter scale. It can even be upgraded after the installation of the machine. The major advantages of the automation on rails will be displayed at the EMO in Hannover during live production of a customer's workpiece.

Requests resulting from the market keep on confirming that the trend in economic production goes to flexible solutions for automation. For this reason, Handtmann is gradually working on meeting current as well as future market's needs and already offers a broad range of automated solutions for its machining centres.

Visit Handtmann on stand A72 in hall 12 and experience the horizontal machining centre HBZ® CompactCell with automation system on rails live at EMO in Hannover. With travel speeds of 60/40/60 m/min in X/Y/Z and spindle powers of max. 75 kW and max. 30,000 rpm the compact machining centre has been convincing already several international customers.
