EU Commission approved grants for Expansion Project in Dresden

Extension will make GLOBALFOUNDRIES in Dresden largest wafer fab in Europe

The EU Commission today confirmed the German state aid package of € 219 M for the extension of GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 in Dresden. The total investment is equal to about 2 billion €. Until end of 2013, GLOBALFOUNDRIES will increase the capacity of its existing Dresden site and at the same time construct another manufacturing building next to it as part of worldwide capacity expansion. The project also adds more than 10,000 m² of clean room space to a then total of more than 50,000 m². The extension will make GLOBALFOUNDRIES Dresden site the largest wafer fab in Europe.

"We are very pleased about today's announcement of the EU Commission. The build-out of our 300mm manufacturing campus supports growing customer demand for advanced technologies. We are currently creating hundreds of new jobs, and the investment also adds to the economic upswing in the surrounding region," said Elke Eckstein, Vice President and General Manager of GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 in Dresden. "We currently have more than 300 open positions for engineers, technicians and high-tech specialists in Dresden."
