Freescale Wins EE Times ACE Awards

Company Earns Innovator of the Year and Executive of the Year Honors

(PresseBox) (Austin, Texas, )
EE Times recognized Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) engineer Leo Mathew as its Innovator of the Year and Freescale Chairman and CEO Michel Mayer as its Executive of the Year at its Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards Tuesday, April 4.

Mathew, a principal solid state engineer, was honored for his invention of a novel transistor structure that could help push the boundaries of Moore's Law. Mayer, who joined Freescale in May 2004, was honored for leading the company to seven consecutive quarters of profitability, reenergizing the corporate culture and starting to build a global brand.

"Leo Mathew is one of the world's foremost experts on the design and manufacture of advanced semiconductors, and this year, is honored with the ACE Award for Innovator of the Year," said Brian Fuller, publisher and editor in chief of EE Times. "His 2005 breakthrough demonstrates a clear and feasible approach to extending CMOS processes to the 45-nm node and possibly beyond. Leo has looked outside the semiconductor industry for inspiration and demonstrated the kind of innovative thinking that is essential for the creation of major technology breakthroughs."

"Congratulations to Leo for this much-deserved recognition and to our wireless and automotive design teams who were finalists in their categories," said Mayer. "The Executive of the Year honor is an individual award, but our progress at Freescale over the past 21 months is the result of great teamwork. I share this award with the 23,000 employees worldwide who have shown a renewed sense of focus, collaboration and competitive fire."

Mathew's transistor structure is an inverted T-channel field-effect transistor (ITFET). It combines vertical and horizontal structures into a single transistor. The technology promises to extend progressive CMOS scaling to the 45-nanometer and finer process nodes. The EE Times ACE Awards were created to recognize the people, companies and products that show leadership in the electronics industry, honoring those who are leading the way and making positive contributions -- the real innovators of technology. Finalists were evaluated by a prestigious panel of judges, comprised of the leading voices of academia, industry and Wall Street executives. Awards were presented at the EE Times ACE Awards Gala on April 4, 2006, during CMP Media's Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley. For more information, visit http://www.eetimes.com/ace.

In addition, Freescale was a finalist in the following categories.

Design Team of the Year

Freescale's i.MX31 and i.MX31L multimedia applications processors were finalists for Design Team of the Year. Starting at 532 MHz, with a vector floating point co-processor and L2 cache, these processors are designed for portable and wireless devices running computationally-intensive multimedia applications.

Processor/Memory

Freescale's MPC5200B, designed for next-generation telematics and infotainment solutions, was a finalist for Processor/Memory. With 760 million instructions per second (MIPS) of processing power, it offers vehicle manufacturers an automotive processor that can unite in-car infotainment and navigation applications. It is also well-suited for networking, media, industrial control and robotics applications.
