Freescale SC3850 DSP core earns highest BDTImark2000(TM) score to date

BDTI recognizes industry-leading performance of Freescale's flagship MSC8156 DSP based on the latest StarCore technology

Freescale Semiconductor's StarCore SC3850 core technology used in the MSC8156 multicore digital signal processor (DSP), has garnered leading benchmark results from independent signalprocessing technology analysis firm, Berkeley Design Technology, Inc. (BDTI). Specifically, Freescale's SC3850 1 GHz core registered the highest fixedpoint BDTImark2000(TM) score of any DSP architecture tested by BDTI to date.

The BDTImark2000 is one of the industry's most respected measures for DSP performance. The score is distilled from a processor's results on the BDTI DSP Kernel Benchmarks(TM) , which is a suite of key DSPoriented algorithms. A higher score indicates a faster core or processor. Freescale's MSC8156 processor is a sixcore device based on SC3850 StarCore DSP core technology and is designed to dramatically advance the capabilities of wireless broadband base station equipment. SC3850 core technology, which populates each of the six cores on the MSC8156 DSP, achieved a BDTImark2000 score of 15420 - the highest score ever certified by BDTI. This score exceeds the BDTImark2000 score of 13170 previously set by Texas Instrument's 1.2 GHz C64X DSP.

Together with its efficient architecture, highly optimized compiler and stateoftheart IDE development suite for highperformance embedded signal processing applications, the MSC8156 allows designers to focus on the application, not on removing systemlevel bottlenecks typically encountered in costly FPGAbased designs and expensivetodevelop ASICbased designs.

The MSC8156 DSP delivers flexibility, integration and affordability while answering demand from wireless base station OEMs for ultrahigh computational performance for baseband applications. The MSC8156 DSP is an ideal choice for applications including multistandard wireless base stations, radar systems, video conferencing servers, voice gateways and industrial applications. The device offers a total of 48 GMACs (Giga Multiply and Accumulate) per second of DSP core performance. The embedded MAPLE-B baseband accelerator offers up to 280 Msps of FFT throughput, up to 175 Msps DFT, 200 Mbps at six iterations of Turbo decoding for 3G-LTE and 100 Mbps of Viterbi decoding with tailbiting and multiiterations.
