Thermo Fisher Scientific Partners with Symyx Technologies, Inc. to Offer Enterprise Level Electronic Laboratory Notebook

(PresseBox) ( Philadelphia, Penn., )
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the signing of a partnership with Symyx Technologies, Inc. to market and sell Symyx Notebook and Symyx Isentris® decision support software. The collaboration with Symyx is a key component of the company's recent launch of Thermo Scientific Connects, and demonstrates the company's ongoing commitment to provide the most comprehensive informatics solutions, in partnership with other industry leaders, to meet the changing needs of business around the world.

By providing an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) as part of its end-to-end solutions, the company provides its customers with a secure and efficient method of managing what has formerly been a manual and time-consuming process of recording research, documents and procedures in the laboratory. The integration of an ELN allows more efficient use of laboratory resources and information, as well as consistent compliance with various regulatory requirements for documented processes, such as those defined by ISO, FDA or GLP.

The initial focus of the company's collaboration with Symyx will be to deliver integration between the Thermo Scientific Watson LIMS(TM) and Symyx Notebook systems. This solution will be designed to accelerate the design, execution, analysis, reporting and documentation of biological and bioanalytical workflows. By sharing sample lists, results, and reports, this comprehensive solution will reduce manual transcription and data manipulation that can result in costly, time-consuming processes, laboratory errors, and regulatory compliance issues. In addition, the Symyx Isentris data access, analysis, and decision support system will help facilitate better collaboration, faster decisions, and more innovative R&D by enabling scientists to leverage corporate, commercial, and local database information in an integrated, self-service research environment.

"Integration of Symyx Notebook and Isentris with the laboratory automation solutions from Thermo Fisher Scientific will enable us to revolutionize the ways in which people work in the lab," said Dr. Trevor Heritage, president of Symyx Software. "The ability to record and execute experimental protocols, capture results, access and analyze data, build reports and collaborate with colleagues seamlessly will be a big win for scientists. This agreement enables us to realize the true potential of the electronic laboratory notebook-moving away from paper-based systems and manual integration, to fully electronic, automated laboratory workflows."

Subsequent program phases will integrate the Symyx Notebook with other Thermo Scientific LIMS designed to enhance workflow automation for other industrial settings such as oil and gas, chemicals, environmental, food and beverage, as well as pharmaceutical.

"We are excited to be working with Symyx," said David Champagne, vice president and general manager of informatics at Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We recognize the importance of offering our customers the most comprehensive solution set possible so that the appropriate tools are available for the specific needs of any application, thereby helping our customers maximize their informatics investment. Adding the Symyx enterprise ELN to our Connects solutions will expand our offerings and help our customers choose the right tool for their many distinct applications."

Thermo Scientific Connects is a solution set that leverages the company's breadth of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Chromatography Data Systems (CDS) capabilities, as well as expertise in enterprise systems integration to help streamline and improve the transfer of knowledge between laboratory-generated data and enterprise-level information systems. Connects is comprised of a combination of Thermo Scientific instruments, LIMS and CDS software, technologies and services, and capitalizes on ongoing partnerships with industry leaders including Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) providers like Symyx Technologies, and document management systems (DMS) companies like NextDocs. Connects allows organizations to integrate application-specific workflows, transforming laboratory data into relevant business information and maximizing a company's enterprise system investments to better support critical management decisions in today's resource-constrained environment.
