Thermo Fisher Scientific Participates in Muddy River Restoration Project

Handheld Thermo Scientific NITON® XRF Analyzers Used to Help Evaluate Sulfur Levels in Planned Historic Landscape Restoration

BILLERICA, MA, (PresseBox) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, is participating in the massive remediation of the Muddy River, in cooperation with Simmons College, by supplying instruments that are used to screen for levels of sulfur in river sediment. Muddy River is part of Boston' s "Emerald Necklace," designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the late 1800s as a 1,100 acre chain of parks linked by parkways and waterways.

In the century since the Muddy River was established as a naturalist urban park, it has deteriorated with inflow of toxic heavy metals, petroleum and other pollutants. Currently, a major restoration is planned that would improve flood control and water quality, enhance its aquatic and riparian habitats, restore the landscape and historic resources and implement improved management practices.

Michael Berger, Assistant Professor of chemistry at Simmons College and a co-author of "Analysis of Sulfur in Sediments Using Handheld XRF Instrumentation" , with Ling Zou, also of Simmons College, and Robert Schleicher and Marty Mastovich, Thermo Fisher Scientific, studied the sulfur content of contaminated sediments in the Muddy River. According to Berger "Previously, sulfur has been considered too light an element to be detected at levels of interest by handheld x-ray fluorescence. The innovative Thermo Scientific helium purge NITON XRF analyzer has changed that.

"The new helium purge capabilities push the detection limit of sulfur down to 0.03 percent. We can now quantify sulfur in the parts per million range, along with heavy RCRA metals, making site surveys faster, easier and more efficient...with one handheld analyzer," Berger continued.

The investigation to measure the levels of sulfur was initiated by Simmons College to evaluate potential volatile sulfur emissions during the sediment dredging operations.

About NITON Analyzers
The Thermo Scientific NITON XL3 Series incorporates 80 MHz real-time digital signal processing and dual state-of-the-art embedded processors for computation, data storage, communication and other functions. The x-ray tube-excited NITON XL3t features a 50 kV, 2-watt miniaturized x-ray tube with multiple multi-layer primary filters, providing optimized excitation for elements ranging from chlorine through the transuranic elements. XL3t Series units can also be equipped with optional small-spot sample analysis, allowing users to switch between 8mm diameter and 3mm diameter sample measurement areas for better isolation and analysis of individual small components.

The optional Helium Purge Light Element Analysis Package extends the analytical range of the NITON XL3t down to magnesium, while the patented Infiniton TM radioisotope source of the NITON XL3p offers the most economical lifecycle cost of any handheld XRF analyzer.

The XL3 Series also features wireless Bluetooth TM or USB data transfer and an optional integrated CCD camera that records a digital image of the test area along with each sample analysis for documentation.

Further, the NITON XL3 Series offers the only fully integrated and environmentally sealed VIP TM tilting color touch-screen display for easy viewing of sample results in any position and under all lighting conditions. In addition, all NITON analyzers use third-generation lithium-ion batteries, providing the longest usage cycle of any portable XRF analyzer.

The NITON XL3 Series comes with the NITON Data Transfer (NDT©) Software, a suite of data management utilities that allows users to produce certificates and reports and monitor or operate the instrument remotely from a PC or PDA. The NDT file format preserves and protects the data from each sample analysis, ensuring that this data is not unintentionally or intentionally compromised. This versatile software suite helps users document test results and ensures the quality and integrity of the data produced by the NITON XL3 Series analyzer.
