Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces Enhanced Thermo Scientific Niton XRF GOLDD Analyzer for Consumer Goods Testing
Upgrades to GOLDD Technology Simplify Lead and Toxic Metal Testing of Toys and Other Consumer Goods for Regulatory Compliance
Thermo Scientific geometrically optimized large area drift detector (GOLDD(TM) ) technology delivers faster measurement times and lower detection limits - as much as 10times faster than conventional Si-PIN detectors and up to threetimes more precise than conventional smaller silicon drift detectors (SDD). When joined with advanced Thermo Scientific Niton analyzer proprietary electronics, new levels of analytical capabilities are realized.
With more regulations and directives, such as the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), California's Proposition 65 and Europe's EN-71, controlling permissible levels of toxic metals in consumer goods, an effective screening program using handheld XRF analysis can greatly reduce the chances that lead or cadmiumcontaining materials will enter the manufacturing process or accidentally end up on store shelves. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the Product Safety Enforcement Forum of Europe (PROSAFE) and other regulators have chosen and trust the Thermo Scientific Niton handheld XRF analyzer.
"We want to reach out to as many stakeholders as possible and let them know that handheld XRF is a proven and accepted technology that is effective in preventing contaminated toys, jewelry and other childaccessible products from reaching children. With the introduction of the enhanced Niton XL3t GOLDD+ Series, we offer a range of products geared toward helping importers, brand owners and retailers implement a standardized inspection protocol for incoming shipments to verify compliance at all stages of the supply chain," said Bob Wopperer, director of marketing and business development for Thermo Scientific Niton Analyzers.
Wopperer continued, "Our analyzers have the proven ability to quickly and reliably provide rapid testing solutions, which accrue from the instruments' portability, easeofuse, speed and nondestructive nature. XRF complements rather than replaces labbased testing, allowing for an optimized, twostage process for finding problem toys, jewelry, apparel and other consumer products. Additionally, our unique Thermo Scientific TestAll technology allows nontechnical users to automatically differentiate the presence of lead on the surface or in the substrate of the tested object."
When users choose the Niton XL3t GOLDD+, the ultimate choice in features plus performance, they will benefit from balancing their compliance challenge with instant elemental analysis results and a decreased reliance on thirdparty laboratories.
Niton XL3t GOLDD+ analyzers have a 50kV, 200 ?A xray tube and tilting, color, touchscreen display. They also come standard with an integrated CCD camera and optional smallspot feature for capturing and storing sample data from components and tiny sample areas for later reference, making the analyzers ideally suited for screening toys, apparel and jewelry. In addition, they help meet compliance with the European Union's (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, as well as screening for halogens to produce halogenfree flame retardant products, which range from consumer electronics to furniture.
A Family of Thermo Scientific Niton XRF Analyzers
Handheld, awardwinning Niton XL3t Series XRF analyzers, as well as Niton XL2 Series analyzers, are purposebuilt for taking measurements anywhere, anytime, with accurate results available in seconds, saving significant expense in comparison to traditional laboratory testing. These easytouse, nondestructive instruments provide integrated storage of all test results, which are completely tamperproof. Multiple communication options are incorporated, including Bluetooth* wireless and USB communications.
They also come standard with Thermo Scientific Niton Data Transfer (NDT©) software, a suite of data management utilities that allows users to set operator permissions, print certificates of analysis to document results or operate the analyzer remotely from a PC. The NDT file format preserves and protects the data from each sample analysis, ensuring that this data is not unintentionally or intentionally compromised.
