Thermo Fisher Scientific Demonstrates Solutions for Compliance Screening in Plastics and Polymers at NPE2009

Thermo Scientific Niton XL3 700 Series XRF Analyzers Offer Unparalleled Performance and Provide Fast, Accurate Screening for Restricted Elements

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will demonstrate its handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XL3 Series analyzer at NPE2009. The versatile x-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument has the ability to measure elemental concentrations in plastics and polymers quickly and simply, without the need for special calibration or other user input. The Niton® XL3t 700 will be showcased at the Thermo Scientific booth #71039 at NPE2009, being held June 22-26 in Chicago.

With the recently enacted Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 regulating allowable levels of lead in substrates and the already existing directives, such as EU and China ROHS, and WEEE, limiting pollution in the waste stream, manufacturers, distributors, OEMs, recyclers and others need fast, accurate, easy-to-use analytical tools to ensure compliance. Screening for toxic substances using the Niton XL3t helps reduce costs and eliminate production delays associated with waiting for lab results, while allowing for a much larger number of samples to be tested in a shorter period of time.

Niton XL3t Series instruments, now available with GOLDD technology, provide a cost-effective analytical solution by accurately measuring all kinds of plastics and polymers. Even high levels of fire retardants, such as bromine and antimony, present no analytical difficulty for the Niton XL3t. All data, including pass/fail results, element concentrations, qualitative sample information and XRF spectra (from phosphorus through uranium), are encrypted and saved in memory for traceability and archiving. A unique thickness algorithm is also included, which enables the Niton XL3 700 Series to accurately test polymer samples only 0.1 mm thick.

"Today's complex regulatory environment governing lead and other restricted elements in consumer plastics presents a major challenge to the manufacturing, recycling, and environmental industries. The responsibility to our children and our environment require adherence to these regulations and a strong verification program at all stages of production," said Jon Shein, director of global marketing for Niton Analyzers with Thermo Fisher Scientific. "Our analyzers have the ability to quickly and reliably provide rapid screening solutions, allowing stakeholders to "trust but verify" for better compliance at a lower cost than other available methods."

About Niton XL3t Series Analyzers

The handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XL3 Series, winner of both the 2008 R&D 100 Award for technological innovation and a 2008 Product of the Year Award in the Product Safety category from Creative Child Magazine, incorporate 80 MHz real-time digital signal processing and dual state-of-the-art embedded processors for computation, data storage, live video processing and communication, and come with many standard features and available options.

The standard Thermo Scientific Niton Data Transfer (NDT©) Software, a suite of data management utilities, allows users to:

- Customize the instrument
- Set user permissions
- Generate custom reports
- Print certificates of analysis personalized with a company`s own logo
- Remotely monitor and operate the instrument hands-free from a PC or PDA.

Integrated USB and Bluetooth communications provide direct data transfer to a PC or networked storage device, eliminating the cumbersome data synchronization procedures required by PDA-based XRF analyzers. The NDT file format preserves and protects the data from each sample analysis, ensuring that this data is not unintentionally or intentionally compromised.

Additionally, users can locate areas of interest on a sample using the integrated color CCD camera and the optional integrated 3 mm small-spot collimation, and then store the test area image along with the analysis data. The Niton XL3t Series offers the only fully integrated and environmentally sealed tilting color touch-screen display for easy viewing of sample results in any position and under virtually all lighting conditions. Also, all Niton analyzers use third-generation lithium-ion batteries, providing the longest usage cycle of any portable XRF analyzer.

The Niton XL3t Series continues to be available in a range of configurations and with an assortment of optional features and accessories to suit a wide variety of analytical needs.
