Yesterday¹s grand opening ceremony finally kicked off the Grand Final of the World Cyber Games 2008. Even before the doors actually opened, rows of youths were queuing up in front of the turnstiles. The excitement and anticipation for what was to come was immense.

After a countdown that seemed to last forever, the pre-show of the opening ceremony finally began with H-Blockx, who really rocked the hall. The energy that the German rock band, which was founded in the 90s, generated on stage was easily transferred to the audience and parts of the crowd really got rocking too.

The opening ceremony was presented by MC Daniel Aminati, German TV presenter and actor, and his beautiful colleague, Viola Tensil. Apart from introducing a wide range of acts and entertainment, they also gave the audience an insight into the colourful lifestyle of the host city Cologne.

Geesung Choi, president of Telecommunication Network Business of Samsung Electronics, said during his opening speech as a representative of WCGC (World Cyber Games Committee), "I would like to welcome 800 players from 78 countries to the World Cyber Games 2008 Grand Final, the largest e-sports event in the world."

Cologne¹s mayor Fritz Schramma in his welcome speech said "In the past, Cologne has been the host of many large international sporting and non-sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup 2006 or the World Youth Day 2005. Cologne has always managed to turn such events into real highlights in the past," and he expressed his hope and confidence that this would certainly be the case with this year¹s World Cyber Games too.

After the World Cyber Games trophy was handed over to the mayor of Cologne by the US team, who won it the last time, the games were officially declared open under the motto "Welcome to the Challenge!"
