Injection molding machine manufacturer Ferromatik Milacron will present an all-electric injection molding machine ELEKTRA evolution 75 with 750 kN clamping force at the MSV in Brno, Czech Republic, from September 14 to 18, 2009. The machine is equipped with an injection unit of international size 120 and produces covers for telephone charging units in a 1-cavity Polar-Form mold at a cycle time of 24 seconds. A special feature of the machine is its High Precision Molding (HiPM) process.

"The HiPM process is used to produce complex parts under difficult processing conditions with maximum shot weigh consistency", explains Marc Tesche, General Manager of Business Unit APPLICATIONS & SYSTEMS. To ensure that the same quantity of melt is fed from the screw for each shot, the closing behavior of the non-return valve is crucial. By activating the HiPM process at the MOSAIC control the sequence of the process can be altered and the closing behavior optimized. "The use of HiPM results in top quality parts", Tesche adds.

HiPM causes the non-return valve to close before the injection process starts. The screw is moved forward to close the non-return valve by means of the increasing pressure in the front section of the screw. When the pressure for filling the mold is reached, screw forward movement stops and defines the relative screw stroke point with value zero. At this point the actual injection process starts on the basis of the injection profile defined by the user. The specified mold filling stroke is controlled with the utmost precision and repeatability. While HiPM can be used to vary the end position of the screw from shot to shot, the volume of melt injected into the mold remains the same.

At the MSV the HiPM process is demonstrated on the ELEKTRA evolution 75. The parts are extracted by a Wemo robot, relieved of the sprue and placed on a scale. The machine monitors the weight and displays it as a trend diagram on the MOSAIC control. The components are then removed on a conveyor belt.

The HiPM process can also be retrofitted on existing machines by means of a special program for the MOSAIC control.

The all-electric ELEKTRA series from Ferromatik Milacron is available as ELEKTRA evolution in eight clamping force sizes from 300 to 3,000 kN. The special model, ELEKTRA selection with selected options, an economically priced model and available with short delivery times, was introduced on the market in 2008. This special model is available in the three clamping force sizes of 500, 750 and 1,100 kN.
