Technology is Key to the European Energy and Climate Strategy

Brussels, (PresseBox) - "There is no contradiction between environmental needs and business opportunities", said European Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen at the EUTurbines Industry Forum in Brussels on 28 November 2007. Europe should use its first-mover advantage. He encouraged the European turbine industry to proceed with its strategy to advocate for technology and innovation.

Gerhard W. Reiff, President of EUTurbines and Member of the Executive Board of MAN Turbo AG, underlined the importance of technology in the context of European energy policy. "Efficiency increases are a crucial measure to combat climate change" said Reiff. He calls for stronger recognition of the supply side efficiency, and particularly of the prominent role of highly efficient energy technology for the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Furthermore he argued to consider efficiency aspects in the funding scheme of Carbon Capture and Storage demonstration projects. "Joint efforts of industry and the EU are prerequisite to promote technology pathways thereby maintaining the technology leadership of its industry" Reiff stated. Political and financial support is necessary to reinforce the competitiveness of the equipment manufacturers.

The EUTurbines Industry Forum was held in Brussels at the prestigious Bilbliothèque Solvay on 28 November 2007. This high-level event attended by 50 senior representatives from EU institutions, EUTurbines members and other stakeholders provided the platform to discuss the role of technology and its industry for Europe's long-term energy strategy.
