2011 EPSE Awards handed out at BATIMAT Show
All 12 entries were displayed on the EPSE website for this year's jury - coming from diverse backgrounds including architecture, journalism and industry - to decide on the runner- up and winner of the Innovation, Sustainability, and Design award.
The Innovation Award saw a close competition between the Baltic Arena, built for the 2012 UEFA Cup in Poland, and the Catania Shopping Centre in Sicily. The Award was bestowed to the Catania Shopping Centre for its use of infra-red extrusion technology that permitted a maximum of natural light with minimal heat transfer.
The Sustainability Award had some interesting entries, including a wind turbine built for a polycarbonate manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland. This wind turbine has paved the way for a range of polycarbonate sheets being manufactured with 20% renewable energy.
However, it was the Tropicarium at Luisenpark in Manneheim, Germany that took home the Sustainability Award for drawing attention to the various benefits of using polycarbonate sheets with an application that both benefitted the exotic inhabitants of the Tropicarium whilst also fully respecting the surrounding environment.
The entries for the Design Award departed from the more practical applications of polycarbonate to highlight the versatility of the material in stunning examples. The runner-up for this year's award was 'Cristallisation' - an installation for the Montpellier Festival of Living Architecture that used twin-walled polycarbonate sheets to create a subtle play between shadows and light. The winner of the Design Award went to the impressive German Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. Visitors to the Pavilion took a tour of a city's harbour, gardens, and downtown all created with polycarbonates sheets for a dazzling effect.
