SET Plan Integrated Roadmap: Reinforced support to Research, Development and Innovation for renewables is needed

Brussels, (PresseBox) - Ahead of discussions on the so-called "Integrated Roadmap of the SET Plan" which should revamp the way Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) policies are developed in the energy sector, EPIA calls on the priorities set in the Solar Europe Industry Initiative Implementation Plan to be properly reflected.

Discussions on a new approach to foster research and development for energy technologies will be launched by the European Commission very soon and should lead to the presentation of a new Integrated Roadmap of the Strategic Energy Technologies (SET) Plan by the end of the year.

EPIA would welcome an integrated approach that builds on the strengths of existing industry initiatives. Aimed at consolidating technology roadmaps of the SET Plan, this new integrated approach should indeed take into account existing technology-specific cooperation, such as the Solar Europe Industry Initiative (SEII), and reinforce SET Plan's support to renewable technologies.

Earlier this year, the SEII team issued its Implementation Plan 2013-2015 in which RDI priorities for photovoltaics (PV) in Europe are defined for the coming years. This document addresses the challenges and actions to be undertaken at RDI level in order for the European PV sector to foster its competitive contribution to a low carbon energy system. It also emphasises on the question of large-scale PV integration into the electricity system and proposes ways to improve the coordination with other relevant industrial initiatives.

"We should not start from scratch with this Integrated Roadmap. The SET Plan is an important instrument to foster the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies. Thus, the focus on renewable technologies should be reaffirmed and the recently published SEII Implementation Plan should be seen as a valuable source of input for the ongoing drafting of the Integrated Roadmap", said Paolo Basso, Policy Officer at the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA).

As PV is becoming a mainstream source of electricity, a continued effort in research, development and innovation is more than ever necessary in order to ensure a strong PV industrial base in Europe and to reinforce Europe's position in the global PV value chain and deployment.

European Photovoltaic Industry Association

EPIA - the European Photovoltaic Industry Association - represents members active along the whole solar PV value chain: from silicon, cells and module production to systems development and PV electricity generation as well as marketing and sales. EPIA's mission is to give its global membership a distinct and effective voice in the European market, especially in the EU.
