A brighter energy future for Europe!
The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) welcomes the agreement reached this morning on the European Renewable Energy Directive. It confirms the binding EU target of 20% renewable energy share by 2020.
Every single Member State will now have to meet its own target by 2020. They will be able to maintain or choose the most appropriate support scheme and cooperate with other countries to achieve their targets.
The world's largest photovoltaic (PV) industry association is delighted to see that its key requests have been taken into account, in particular:
- safeguarding of national support schemes
- strong promotion of renewables in buildings
- reduction and simplification of administrative procedure
- security of investments
Eleni Despotou, EPIA Deputy Secretary General and Policy Director, concludes: "The implementation of this Directive is a major milestone for Europe's energy future; furthermore it will provide a secure investment environment, ensuring a continued sustainable development of the PV sector".
It is now up to Member States to implement effectively this Directive at national level and set ambitious solar PV targets within their national action plans.
The PV industry has recently set an ambitious target to supply up to 12% of European electricity demand by 2020. This Directive sets an appropriate environment to reach such a target and to ensure PV energy becomes a mainstream energy source in tomorrow's energy mix.
Solar photovoltaic technologies will contribute to turn energy users into energy producers. The course of the solar age is being set today.
European Photovoltaic Industry Association
With over 190 Members drawn from across the entire solar electricity sector, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association represents over 95% of the European photovoltaic industry. EPIA members are present throughout the whole value-chain of the photovoltaic industry: from silicon, cells and module production to systems development. EPIA's mission is to deliver a distinct and valuable service driven from the strength of a single European photovoltaic voice.
