MTG programme on track

In the last two months Germany, Luxembourg, Hungary and Slovenia have joined the countries voting in favour of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Programme Resolution.

This brings the number of EUMETSAT Member States which have confirmed their support for the programme to 17, putting MTG on track for approval by all Member States.

The 17 confirmed "yes" votes represent over 75 per cent of the MTG programme budget. Reacting to this good news, the EUMETSAT Director-General, Dr. Lars Prahm, said, "I look forward to achieving full approval of this promising new programme and to attaining the required unanimity no later than the 71st Council meeting scheduled from 30 November to 1 December 2010."

MTG will begin replacing the current Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) in 2018. The space segment will include four MTG-I imaging and two MTG-S sounding satellites. MTG-I will carry a Flexible Combined Imager and a Lightning Imager and MTG-S an Infrared Sounder and Ultraviolet Visible Near-infrared Sounder provided by the European Space Agency under the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Sentinel-4 programme.
