EPAM Systems, the leading offshore software development services company with development centers in Central and Eastern Europe, announces that the Saratov State University team, sponsored by the company, became a Silver prize winner at the recent ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest held in Tokio, Japan. Having demonstrated the sixth best result in complex, real-world problem-solving the team competed with eighty-eight teams of students from around the globe.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) traces its roots to a competition held at Texas A&M in 1970. Today it is one of the most prestigious and the oldest programming contests organized to foster creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building new software programs, and to enable students to test their ability to perform under pressure.

ACM President Stuart Feldman pointed to the superior problem-solving abilities demonstrated throughout the competition from teams across the globe. "The competition at the ACM ICPC World Finals is incredible. The contestants must attack a wide variety of problems, and the top 15 teams are all performing at a level that exceeds what it took to win the contest only 10 years ago," he said. "This contest is a concrete indicator of talent and future possibility. Students like these are tomorrow's top prospects in the information technology and computing fields."

The Saratov State University has advanced its team to the ACM-ICPC World Finals for the fifth time. Both in 2002 and 2003 the team was awarded silver medals. Additionally, in 2002 the team was also crowned Europe's programming champion. In 2006 the Saratov State University students were the first prize winners of the European programming championship and of the ACM Contest World Finals.

"EPAM has been a long-term supporter of the initiatives targeting the finest and brightest students specializing in computing disciplines. As the sponsor of the Saratov team's participation, we are deeply satisfied with the outstanding results demonstrated by the contestants, thus reconfirming the leadership position of the Russian programming school on the worldwide scale", said Serguei Laletine, Director, EPAM Saratov Development Center.

"We are confident that our cooperation with EPAM, the CEE region's leading software development outsourcing provider, will further stimulate the intellectual cravings of our students revealing such amazing results", noted Dmitry Usanov, Saratov State University Pro-rector.

Alexey Klimov, the ACM- ICPC finalist, Saratov State University student shared his impression of the contest, "Our participation in the ACM Contest Finals brings us invaluable experience. We are happy to have had the opportunity to prove again to the whole world the top level of the Russian programmers. We would also like to express our genuine thanks to EPAM for their ongoing support and help."

"Russia's strong technical skills, sound methodologies, and high education levels are often cited both by the industry analysts and media. Many western clients name these qualities as the key reasons for selecting Russian software engineering services providers to engage in large-scale, complex R&D and high tech projects. As an outsourcer leveraging the resource talent of Eastern Europe, and Russia in particular, we are proud to witness the Russian IT potential grow year after year as more savvy engineering minds boldly step in," commented Arkadiy Dobkin, EPAM CEO and President, on the team's commendable achievements.
