ENTSO-E Members Launch the European Awareness System to Help Keep Europe Switched On

The European electricity system is highly interconnected, and if a disturbance occurs in a European country, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) coordinate and cooperate to restore the system to a normal state. To do this rapidly, TSOs need a real-time view of energy flows and the system state across the whole of Europe. The European Awareness System (EAS) delivers this essential pan-European view to ENTSO-E member TSOs, thereby increasing security of supply for consumers.

Launched in April 2013, and building on decades of TSO cooperation, the European Awareness System is an important collaborative tool for ENTSO-E TSO members across 35 European States. It covers Scandinavia, the Baltic States, the British Isles and Continental Europe, helping to ensure that energy consumers stay seamlessly connected during extreme weather peaks or system failures.

'This kind of cooperation is standard practice among TSOs, but the new system allows more widely coordinated, rapid and efficient responses,' says Klaus Kleinekorte, ENTSO-E's System Operations Committee Chairman. 'The European Awareness System opens a new chapter in pan-European TSO collaboration, in response to evolving consumer expectations and EU energy objectives.'

A main priority for Transmission System Operators' is to ensure security of supply to European citizens and businesses. The EAS allows TSOs to monitor real-time information on the transmission systems across Europe, and react quickly with assistance or system measures if an area appears to be under stress, both in the prevention and resolution of disturbances.

TSOs from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, serving many millions of European energy users, are already operational on the European Awareness System. Another 25 TSOs will come on line over the remainder of 2013.
