Emerson Wins Contract to Upgrade Turbine Controls and Hydraulic Equipment at Associated Electric Cooperative's New Madrid Power Plant
Project underscores Emerson’s comprehensive turbine control expertise
AECI is owned by and provides wholesale power to six regional and 51 local electric cooperative systems in Missouri , northeast Oklahoma and southeast Iowa that serve more than 800,000 customers. The New Madrid plant is comprised of two 600-MW coal-based electric generating units. As a baseload plant, it is critical to AECI's mission of providing an economical and reliable power supply to member systems.
After comprehensive review of automation enabling technologies, such as the OPC standard, which promotes platform independence, AECI decided to open this project to competitive bid rather than maintain its existing single supplier relationship. Under the resulting contract, Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will replace existing mechanical hydraulic controls for two Brown Boveri Corporation (BBC) steam turbine generators with Ovation® turbine control system technology. The project also calls for Emerson to upgrade each unit's existing BBC mechanical hydraulic equipment with a high-pressure electro-mechanical system that allows for more responsive and precise control.
Emerson's turbine control solution is based on the company's Ovation expert control technology, which was designed specifically to meet the challenges of the power generation industry. Emerson's controls are in operation on more than 1,100 steam and combustion turbines around the world. As a key component of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital architecture, Ovation technology has translated into increased reliability, improved diagnostic capabilities and more precise control for power generation facilities.
Using an industry standard, high-speed connection, the Ovation turbine control system for New Madrid Units 1 and 2 will link to existing ABB Symphony boiler control systems. The Ovation system will replace and perform all the functions of the hydraulic control elements of the BBC mechanical hydraulic controls, including operation of valves with control fluid actuators and mechanical tripping functions. In addition, the New Madrid Ovation system includes automatic turbine startup and synchronization, as well as rotor stress monitoring capabilities.
Equipment delivery for Unit 2 is scheduled for September 2006; Unit 1 equipment delivery is expected in February 2007.
Emerson is a leader in the design, installation and support of steam, gas and boiler feedpump turbine control solutions. With decades of power generation industry experience, Emerson has provided mechanical hydraulic control and electro hydraulic control and equipment for gas and steam turbines from all major turbine manufacturers, as well as smaller players in this market, according to Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division at Emerson.
"Unlike some vendors, who use third-party components and outsourced hydraulic engineering, Emerson has a fully integrated solution that is built from the ground up on the Ovation platform for turbine control,” said Yeager.
Yeager explains that this solution comes from the many years that Emerson provided the OEM-based controls for the entire line of Westinghouse steam and combustion turbines, as well as years of experience in the retrofit market providing new controls on hundreds of turbines from virtually every manufacturer. “With this expertise, power generators can be assured that Emerson's turbine control solution translates into efficient operation, tighter control and the highest reliability and safety,” Yeager concluded.
