Earlybird increases focus on Berlin and announces promotions
- Berlin to become Earlybird's core hub
- Earlybird announces promotions to attract and retain fresh talent
- Munich continues operations
Earlybird has announced that it will be significantly increasing its presence in Berlin by moving its entire Hamburg operations to Berlin. Earlybird had already opened a smaller office in Berlin last April, but has now decided to make the city its core hub by moving the Hamburg team of investment professionals and operational staff to Berlin.
"We already have six companies in Berlin and expect this number to increase sharply over the next years. Also Berlin has become by far the largest source of opportunities for us - so it is only logical that we should be at the heart of where it's happening", Christian Nagel, Managing Partner and co-founder of Earlybird said.
Earlybird's investments in Berlin include Azeti (www.azeti.net) CrowdPark (www.crowdpark.com), EBS Technologies (www.ebstech.de), Madvertise (www.madvertise.com), Smava (www.smava.de) and Ubitrictiy (www.ubitricity.com).
Ciarán O'Leary, who is being promoted to Partner and had set up Earlybird's Berlin office added: "Of course you can fly in and out and still meet the best teams. But really the advantage comes down to building deep relationships with the entire ecosystem over several years - that is much easier done when you live here. Also we want to offer our entrepreneurs the best service by being as accessible as possible."
"We will be doing things very differently in Berlin. Whereas most VC offices tend to be similar to those of private banks, we are creating an open and friendly space much better suited for working together with entrepreneurs", added Max Claussen, who has been promoted to Principal and also played a crucial role in setting up Earlybird Berlin.
The 12-strong team in Berlin will also include Matias Collan, who was promoted to Chief Operating Partner in 2011 and further to Managing Director earlier this year, being in charge of Earlybird's entire fund governance, operational and finance aspects. Earlybird has also appointed Heiko Thiel to head of finance, who will also be based in Berlin.
After hiring US serial entrepreneur Jason Whitmire as a new General Partner the internal promotions are intended to further strengthen Earlybird's talent base. "Many VC partnerships go stale after a while as they are either not able or willing to attract or retain the best new talent. We have a wider vision at Earlybird to create a very sustainable and long-term platform and this is reflected in our hiring and promotion strategy", said Hendrik Brandis, Managing Partner and co-founder of Earlybird.
Earlybird will continue to operate its office in Munich due to the very strong B2B and cleantech environment there.
