duisport Pioneers New Trends: Port of Duisburg first inland port worldwide to introduce vessel tracking

Use of the Internet platform/ Real time monitoring of vessel traffic / Improved transportation chain planning

(PresseBox) (Duisburg , ) Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) will become mandatory for national voyages on 1 July 2008. The Port of Duisburg has already introduced AIS installed first in sea ports in late 2004 to enhance transportation and vessel security. "The Port of Duisburg was the first inland port worldwide to launch vessel tracking, when it decided to use our system," said Ralf Paahsen who is the owner of the Internet platform. The platform shows the real time positions of vessels on the screen. "We provide our customers with an innovatory service on a par with sea port standards," said Duisburger Hafen AG's Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake.

Against the backdrop of the high level of congestion at major sea ports, the system will for instance determine the current positions of expected vessels for the container terminals in Duisburg. "As AIS will be installed on all seagoing vessels on national voyage by 1 July 2008, real time tracking will be feasible on all services," explained Paahsen. The mode of visualization ranges from Google Earth to Microsoft Virtual Earth. The new tracking platform will help to coordinate vessel traffic flow and to enhance the management of logistic chains.

More efficiency is a particularly important objective for the large number of shuttle services which tie into the Duisburg hub. "Dedicated shuttle operations require sophisticated logistics based on regular information flow and consistent planning. Vessel tracking integrates information and creates time and quality benefits," underlined Staake.

All vessels equipped with AIS transmit name, type of vessel, length, width and other data on VHF radio. These data are picked up by AIS transponders offered by a wide range of manufacturers and then processed at the receiving end. "The vessel is shown directly on the screen no more than two minutes after data transmission began," Paahsen described the system.

Some 50 transmitter stations have been installed by since its establishment less than two years ago. The tracking service covers all major ports in the Hamburg - Le Havre range and beyond. Subscription is mainly offered to logistic service providers, agents and, of course, port operators.
