duisport Group builds on successful business model
Total output rises to € 148 m / container handling at record level / regional and international activities
In the 2010 financial year the duisport Group generated consolidated sales of € 139.7 m (2009: € 138.6 m). When pro rata sales from strategic holdings are included this results in total sales volumes of € 148 m (2009: € 145 m). In the business segment infra- and suprastructure as well as in transshipment and logistics services, it was possible to increase sales from € 71.0 m in 2008 to € 80.1 m last year. Due to the delay in the effects of the economic crisis on the mechanical engineering sector, the Packing Logistics segment had to accept a slight decline in sales to € 50.2 (2009: € 52.3).
duisport with high investment level
With a total of € 23.0 m duisport also continued its high level of investment in 2010. The main investment focal points were the packing hall on the Nordhafen site, expanding handling capacities as well as building up the port and rail infrastructure further. Development and expansion throughout the port Kühne + Nagel expanded its warehouse capacities onto one of the last free plots of land on the logport site in two construction phases, to over 100,000m². This was added to a further 65,000 m² of warehouse space that Kühne + Nagel has successfully operated in the logistics center on the Kaßlerfeld part of the port on the right bank of the Rhine for many years. "The continuing demand for high quality logistics space on our sites shows the outstanding reputation of Duisburg as a logistics location. At the same time it encourages us to develop additional space to offer to potential customers," said Staake optimistically.
In Kühne + Nagel's direct neighborhood, the Buhlmann Group underlined the significance of the Duisburg location to the whole company with the construction of a new administrative building. Buhlmann is consolidating all its worldwide imports and exports via the Duisburg turntable on nearly 40,000 m² of hall space. These goods are shipped in the Port of Antwerp. The Duisburg Kombi Terminal (DKT), a Bertschi Group company which only started operations in 2009, contributed to the positive development of the Duisburg logistics turntable and began installing two portal cranes. Thus up to 140,000 container movements a year will be possible at this terminal on the logport site. Deutsche Bahn is investing € 19 m over the next three years in developing the Kohleinsel on the port area on the right side of the Rhine. With this development to 10 m tonnes, handling capacities on the almost 200,000m² site will almost double. Thus the increasing demand for import coal will be met. "Our partners' investments are contributing to the port job motor continuing to run flat out. There are now over 40,000 people employed directly and indirectly by the port", said Erich Staake with pleasure.
New pillar in the Ruhr region
At the end of last year the duisport Group and RÜTGERS Germany GmbH founded the joint venture 'TARLOG' to develop logistics activities and market space in the RÜTGERSIndustriepark in Castrop-Rauxel together. duisport is providing its know-how in realizing efficient transport chains on rails and waterways, in maintaining and operating port and track infrastructure as well as in marketing industrial service space. Together the new partners want to develop the site into an industrial location focusing on logistics, chemicals, transport and energy. "This joint venture represents another important building block of our logistics commitment to the Ruhr region and it is promoting intelligent transport and logistics concepts in the key chemical sector", said Erich Staake. "Through TARLOG our chemical logistics activities will be expanded by a new pillar, thus contributing to a strengthening of the Rhine-Ruhr logistics region," continued Staake.
Rail links built up
The continuing positive development of the regional shuttle trains, such as the 'Glückaufexpress' or the 'Chemsite- Express', is driving forward the networking of the Ruhr region. New rail connections are also being developed beyond the Ruhr region and the frequency of existing connections is being increased again. The 'Moscovite' should be highlighted here, which has connected Duisburg to the Russian capital city Moscow since May 2010. The train, which has been traveling once a week initially, needs seven days for the 2,200 km route. It is planned to increase the frequency this year. With the construction of the Rhine-Ruhr hub the development of the Duisburg rail turntable is being driven further forward. Over € 100 m is being invested in this joint project by Deutsche Bahn and duisport to create a mega hub for handling rail-rail. After the hub is completed in the coming year the Port of Duisburg's distribution role will be further strengthened.
Driving international activities further forward
After the duisport consult's successful start in 2009 it was possible to further develop international activities last year. In addition new partners who will sustainably accompany this development were integrated. duisport founded a joint venture named duisport partners with HOCHTIEF Concessions AG, a subsidiary of the international construction service provider HOCHTIEF, to develop ports and port terminals together. The new company will take over the management, operation and marketing of ports and port terminals. This will also include their planning, development and construction. "With the foundation of this company duisport will be in a position to develop the internationalization steps already taken in a targeted manner and to establish them permanently. We will also be able to realize logistics projects with value creating results for NRW in strategic markets," said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. Alongside the new joint venture duisport had already made initial contacts with the Brazilian government in spring last year, which could be firmed up during the course of 2010. As a result duisport will advise the Brazilian government to prepare a logistics concept for the so-called Sao Paulo-Santos corridor. The corridor is the main artery for Brazilian flows of goods between the coast and the economically strong hinterland of Sao Paulo. "Optimizing Brazilian transport routes is a huge challenge for the upcoming years. We're proud to have been entrusted with assisting the formation of this pioneering project," said Staake.
Grand total at pre-crisis level
With a grand total of 54 m tonnes (previous year 44 m tonnes), the Duisburger Hafen group has almost reached the level of the pre-crisis year 2008. Ship and rail handling in the duisport Group's ports was at 28.5 tonnes in 2010. This was evenly distributed across the two modes of transport ship (14 m tonnes) and rail (14 m tonnes). The increase of ship handling by 18% on the previous year should particularly highlighted.
Container handling with record result
Container handling for the three modes of transport ship, rail and truck rose to about 2.25 m TEU, which is equivalent to a plus of about 25% on the previous year. All this should be considered against the background that in the container segment, duisport had only posted a minimal decline of 4% in the crisis year 2009. "To have been able to post such growth in container handling, especially in light of the fact that we were coming from such a high level from the past year, encourages us to develop our capacities further," commented Staake.
