video phone calls between PCs and mobile phones

T-Online and T-Mobile jointly announce their intention of launching a new video-telephony service from the end of 2006. In the future, customers of the two Deutsche Telekom companies will be able to make video phone calls between UMTS-capable mobile devices and PCs.

"Thanks to our partnership with T-Mobile, we are now pioneers in the video-telephony segment. Our new service will make our customers' Internet communications even more varied, attractive and easy to handle," says Dr. Volker Binder, Head of Product Marketing, Services & Mobile Internet at T-Online International AG. And Dr. Alexander Lautz, Head of Consumer-Marketing at T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH, adds: "With this new video-telephony service, T-Mobile is again underlining its innovative leadership in the mobile-communications market. We will be the first provider in Germany not only to offer our customers video telephony from mobile phone to mobile phone, but also to extend video-telephony functionality to several million T-Online DSL customers, thanks to our close cooperation with T-Online."

A video call can be made both from a PC to a mobile phone and vice versa. Before the connection is made, the T-Online user activates the video function of the Internet-telephony software and calls the T-Mobile customer's number. In order to set up a video call, T-Mobile customers call the T-Online customer's number (beginning with 032). Both the caller on the Internet phone and the caller on the video-telephony mobile phone can decide whether they would like to send their own picture or not.

Users of the T-Online Internet telephone have to be registered for DSL telephony and will need a headset and a webcam to make a video call. T-Mobile contract customers with cell phones supporting video telephony can immediately set up a video call to T-Online customers or receive calls from them - and there is no difference from a traditional video call. T-Mobile is constantly expanding the available range of video-telephony-capable mobile phones.

T-Online and T-Mobile are demonstrating how video telephony works between PCs and mobile phones at the CeBIT in Hanover in Hall 26 at the Deutsche Telekom booth (A01).
