A consortium of four strong partners (Deloitte, Deutsche Telekom, HYVE and RWTH Aachen) seeks ideas for finding and following things

Bonn, Germany, (PresseBox) - Machine-to-machine communication (M2M) stands for automatic data communication between different kinds of technical devices. By connecting these gadgets to fixed or mobile networks it is possible to enable them to communicate. M2M clears the way for a nearly endless range of application areas; therefore the benefits of this technology will soon be tangible in different areas of every-day- life.

To foster the development of ideas, innovation, and trends in the area of M2M a consortium of four partners, Deloitte, Deutsche Telekom, HYVE and RWTH Aachen University has launched the open innovation platform The objective is to generate ideas and identify future trends in this growing area of the communication industry. The first contest is focusing on topics regarding finding and following things, persons and animals to make future life easier and more convenient. The contest intends to create awareness for the positive effects that M2M applications can have for life, work and society and to stimulate innovation across industries. By gathering opinions and ideas from a broad base of creative participants and challenging them with a scientific point of view, future fields of research within this area will be identified.

The four partners operating the contest cover all relevant areas of expertise to ensure that the ideation process yields the highest innovation: as a management and strategy consulting firm, Deloitte brings in innovative thought and telecommunications expertise, analytical know-how and its global network; as a leading telecommunication company Deutsche Telekom provides telecommunication and technological expertise and deep insight; as an company delivering the innovation platform, HYVE provides expertise in open innovation concepts and contests; as one of Europe's leading institution for science and research, RTWH Aachen University provides best-in-class thought leadership concerning open innovation.

Co-create ideas with us for a technology that helps you finding, following and locating things

With this ideation challenge the contest partners are aiming to gather ideas and input from creative thinkers, entrepreneurs, pioneers, IT experts and anyone interested in this innovative topic. M2M is one of the future mega trends in the communication industry. There exist multiple areas of applications such as digital signage, telematics or tracking & tracing, logistics and security. However, markets for M2M solutions and services have not been developed and penetrated intensely and the potential of this innovative technology is not explored entirely up to now. This open innovation contest focuses on the finding and following of persons, animals or goods. Potential ideas can be created based on two existing, ready-to-use technologies: location based services and GPS plus GSM. The main objective of this contest is to create ideas and concepts of M2M tracking & tracing solutions through open innovation. The discussion and rating of ideas, issues or concepts is important for generating new food for thoughts. With the open innovation paradigm the contest supports the collaboration within the idea generation process, creates active, stable and growing networks and stimulates motivation to generate new ideas. This is achieved by using Web 2.0 functionality as well as a user-friendly and intuitive user interface. The elementary function of the contest is to provide a platform where ideas can be generated, presented, published and evaluated collectively. Existing ideas are further developed and new ideas are created. The higher the level of activity, the better will be the ideas. So, get involved!

How Do Contestants Benefit?

The contest partners will award prizes of USD 10,000.- to the three contestants with the best ideas and the participation in an innovation workshop together with RWTH Aachen University and HYVE. In addition, contestants get to share, cooperate and give/receive feedback about ideas with some of the most creative people from around the globe, including a selection of interesting experts who are either members of the contest partners or come from other external partners.

How does the contest work?

With the registration on the platform participants can submit their ideas for the "find & follow idea contest". This "find and follow idea contest" is the first of a row of contests which will be run in the area of M2M. The community and a team of named experts explore, discuss, evaluate and consequently develop those ideas together. At the end of the contest a jury of experts from different fields and backgrounds will evaluate the submissions and name the winners of the contest. The contest is conducted via a web-based platform, where ideas and experiences are submitted and discussed in an open forum. The platform is open from now onwards.

The RWTH-TIM Research Group

The RWTH Technology and Innovation Management Group ("Lehrstuhl für Technologie- und Innovations management") was established in 1990 by the School of Business and Economics of RWTH Aachen University. It is one of the first management research groups in the German-speaking world, whose research and teaching interests are focused on management aspects of product development and launch, as well as the application and maintenance of process and product technology (e.g. manufacturing technology). Prof. Frank Piller has been leading this group since 2007.

RWTH-TIM has built a worldwide reputation for research on open innovation and customer-centric value creation. About 20 full-time researchers work on these and related topics, funded by projects from the German National Academy of Science (DFG), the European Community, the German federal departments of research and economics,, and from various companies.
