ContiTech standardizes air actuator range with stainless steel connecting plates - economical, sturdy, durable

ContiTech Air Spring Systems has standardized its air actuator product range with stainless steel connecting plates while further enhancing delivery quality. "We have standardized the product and it is now available in eight sizes with a delivery guarantee of three weeks," explains Dr. Olaf Kluth, market segment head at ContiTech Air Spring Systems. "Here, we have managed to feature crimping plates made of stainless steel as well in the tried-and-tested construction.

Air actuators are ideal when major forces are required for lifting or pressing, little space is available for installation and exceptionally harsh conditions prevail. It is the flexing of the outer shell on air actuators designed for pneumatic functions that generates the stroke motion. Since air actuators can do without mechanically operated parts like pistons, piston rods and friction gaskets, they are not subject to wear and are free of friction, in comparison to conventional cylinders. Thanks to their low fitted height, they give engineers more leeway in minimizing the pneumatic system's design height while providing maximum stroke distance. This saves space and keeps material and design expense down for machinery and equipment.

Air actuators with stainless steel connecting plates are ideal for applications with high anticorrosion protection requirements. As they are highly resistant to aggressive media such as chemicals, they are often put to use in the paper industry, where they are exposed to such media. ContiTech air actuators with stainless steel connecting plates are particularly well suited to this application for two reasons. "The stainless steel connecting plate is resistant to media and the bellows is nearly free of caking since material does not have a chance to adhere due to the constant flexing of the bellows." In addition, the material properties of rubber can be adapted for the use of chemicals and other aggressive media.

The use of air actuators is not, however, limited to just the paper industry. In applications with course outer caking and dirt - such as in the woodworking and textile machinery industries, conveyor systems as well as in offshore applications - air actuators function very well as wear-free, economical constructions. Other advantages: Depending on the type in question, air actuators can deliver tilt angles of up to 30° and a lateral offset of as much as 30 millimeters without requiring special connections. The standard program comprises air actuators 60 - 1000 mm in diameter. With a pressure of 8 bar, standard products with a diameter of 1000 mm can lift a mass of more than 40 tonnes.
