Offshore power – MaK marine engines for Harms Anchor Handling Tugs

(PresseBox) (Hamburg, ) When maritime services company Harms Bergung Transport & Heavylift GmbH in Hamburg re-entered the sea towage market in 2004, there was a lot of speculation about what was to come. Since then Harms' first new generation, MaK-powered Anchor Handling Tug (AHT) "Primus" has proven its worth in daily service.

The third generation of Harms AHTs followed in 2007 and 2008 with the sister ships "Janus" and "Ursus". Another two newbuildings, "Uranus" and "Orcus", are expected for delivery in 2008 and 2009. Finally, two ships to be named "Pegasus" and "Centaurus" are due into service in 2009. All the ships are being built at Mützelfeldtwerft in Cuxhaven, Germany, on behalf of MAN Ferrostaal AG, Essen, and are intended for global offshore operations. They are also all powered by MaK main engines and Cat® generating sets.

"Primus" is propelled by 2x MaK 9 M 25 main engines, each rated 2,970 kW at 750 rpm, providing a continuous bollard pull of 104 tons. This ship is 48.87 metres long, 13.80 metres wide and draws 5.20 metres. "Janus" and "Ursus" are considerably larger with a length of 65 metres, a beam of 18.50 metres and a draught of 6.80 metres. Both rely on 2x MaK 6 M 32 C plus 2x MaK 8 M 32 C main engines in father-and-son configurations. These four engines provide 500 kW per cylinder at 600 rpm for a total 14,000 kW power and 220 tons continuous bollard pull. The father-and-son configuration means both reliable power at full throttle towage and efficient power during standby operations. Janus and Ursus also utilise 2x Cat 3412 generating sets and 1x Cat 3056 emergency gen sets each.

Harms' most recent newbuildings, "Uranus" and "Orcus" will be even more powerful. Four MaK 9 M 32 C main engines, rated 4,500 kW at 600 rpm each, will provide 18,000 kW total power and a minimum expected bollard pull of 280 tons. Vessel size will again slightly increase, to 74.30 meters length, 18.50 metres beam and 8.50 metres draught. Ship is expected to be 17 knots providing a fast but still comfortable floating home for up to 69 people. Uranus and Orcus will have 2x Cat 3412 generating sets and 1x Cat C9 emergency gen set each for electrical power supply. Zeppelin Power Systems, the German Caterpillar® dealer, has also delivered four shaft generators for Power Take Off (PTO). The two ships of the "Centaurus" class expected in 2009 will be equipped with 2x MaK 9 M 25 C marine engines, rated 2,970 kW at 750 rpm each.

As with "Primus", these AHTs will provide 16 knots and a bollard pull of about 100 tons.

Harms Bergung Managing Director Michael Albrecht underscored that MaK marine engines were very reliable and proven in daily vessel operation: "Our expectations with respect to power supply and fuel efficiency in the MaK products have been fully met. And although Zeppelin Power Systems offers excellent customer service, so far we have only had to make use of it for scheduled engine maintenance."

Klaus Dammann, Sales Director Marine Systems at Zeppelin Power Systems, is pleased that customers recognise the efforts Zeppelin makes not only in sales but also in product service and customer care: "In providing Harms Bergung and Mützelfeldtwerft with MaK and Cat marine engines, we are partnering with two leading players in the European offshore tug market. Since we initially powered Primus back in 2004, MAN Ferrostaal has ordered a further 32 marine engines and gen sets for six new AHTs. This demonstrates the satisfaction of both yard and owner with the performance of Zeppelin Power Systems."

Alexander Kohse, Territory Sales Manager at Caterpillar Marine Power Systems in Hamburg, highlighted the partnership with both Mützelfeldtwerft and MAN Ferrostaal: "The offshore vessel market has been buoyant for quite a while, providing us with lots of opportunities to establish MaK and Cat marine engines as the preferred source of power aboard. However, a series of seven impressively-shaped AHTs, both built and operated close to CMPS Hamburg headquarters naturally commands special attention. We are happy to hear that further repeat orders are under consideration."
