Grand entrance for the be healthy and stay healthy
Edelmann presents its extensive pharma portfolio on the CPhI Worldwide fair in Barcelona
The „Delegated Regulation“ to the EU Falsified Medicines Directive as published on the 9th February 2016 by the European Commission requires that the packaging of prescription medicines be individualised by serialisation codes in order to safeguard their Identification und traceability. The contents of this “Delegated Regulation” will be set into force on 09th February 2019. According to securPharm the print of a randomized and individually assigned serial number on the pharmaceutical packaging is the most pragmatic solution. The data carrier will be applied in the form of a data matrix code. This includes the German Pharmacy Central Number (PZN), which is integrated into the Pharmacy Product Number (PPN) or the National Trade Item Number (NTiN).
Security features, dynamic series of numbers and international guidelines
The quality of the printed codes and the highest safety standards when generating the number ranges are the main challenges. Edelmann is prepared and can take over all the packaging-relevant IT services: from the number range management to the complete data handling. The print itself can be carried out in four Edelmann digital printing centers.
Depending on the requirements, Edelmann applied on the carton either bar codes, serial or randomized alphanumeric sequences or 2-D Data Matrix codes. Also the marking of the pharmaceutical folding with the so-called CFDA code, as it is regulatory required in China, is possible. Here the specified 128C barcode consisting of 20 digits is printed.
In addition, the packaging must have characteristics - known as tamper Verification Features - features, which indicate a manipulation. Edelmann recommends to guarantee the identification of the product via serialization as well as the verification of the original packaging using security features, as they are known from the banknote printing.
The authentication of pharmaceutical packaging can be done via a variety of applicable security features. The spectrum of the features developed by Edelmann is ranging from visible – e. g. embossing, security printing and die-cuttings as well as applications such as open and semi-open security labels - up to invisible elements, so-called hidden images that can only be seen with special tools. Up to 20 features can be combined individually to a product and to the individually complementary counterfeiting risk concept.

Hereby a contemporary address to the patient is guaranteed. Screens that are implemented into pharmaceutical packaging allow to communicate pharmaceutical forms and beyond that the manufacture, application and effect of the medicament to the patient.
