CANopen standardized for rail vehicle applications

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) has released the IEC 61375-3-3:2012 standard (edition 1.0). This document standardizes the CANopen Consist Network (CCN). It specifies the data communication between sub-systems of the TCMS (train control and monitoring system). CANopen was originally developed for use in, but is not limited to, industrial automation applications. Networked devices and sub-systems may include traction controllers, human machine interfaces, input/output modules, sensors, hydraulic devices or sub-controllers for lightning, etc. The IEC 61375-3-3 standard applies to all equipment and devices operated on a CANopen-based consist network within a TCN (Train Communication Network) architecture as defined in IEC 61375-1. It specifies rail vehicle specific additions to the generic CANopen application layer standard (EN 50325-4). This includes for example the gateway specification for the WTB (Wire Train Bus) and some physical layer parameter such as bit-rate settings.

The backbone consist network are often bridged to sub-layered CANopen networks interconnecting simple devices such as switches, sensors, actuators, and sub-controllers. A typical sub-layered CANopen network comprises single door modules, and the door controller, which is also connected to the CANopen consist network. The necessary CANopen interface (CAN controller and CAN transceiver) costs are very reasonable, due to the very high volume used in passenger cars (more than 800 million nodes).

CANopen is one of the most robust and reliable networks, because it is based on the internationally standardized CAN (Controller Area Network). The application layer provides flexibility and the associated profiles guarantees a high degree of interoperability. CiA (CAN in Automation) members develop jointly all CANopen specifications and profiles. CiA is the nonprofit organization for CAN users and manufacturers headquartered in Germany. The association comprises more than 570 members worldwide.
