Boston-Power and BMZ Batterien-Montage-Zentrum Partner to Deliver Next-Generation Lithium-ion Battery Solutions
Extensive international cooperation agreement
Founded in 2005 by Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud, Boston-Power is fueled by the mission to develop longer lasting and environmentally sustainable lithiumion cells. The company recently celebrated the third anniversary of its rechargeable lithiumion battery cells having earned the esteemed Nordic Ecolabel accreditation. Boston-Power remains the only rechargeable lithiumion battery worldwide to hold this designation. The company's products have also earned a similar industryfirst certification from the China Environmental United Certification Center (CEC).
With over 1000 charge/discharge cycles, Boston-Power's Sonata cells offer three to five times longer life expectancy than traditional 18650 cells that are used in notebooks and many other portable devices. The three to five times higher life expectancy compared with traditional 18650 cells not only translates to a reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO) by up to 40%, but also contributes to less waste during manufacturing and disposal. Sonata cells also offer fast charge capabilities, charging to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes - only 20% of the usual time required using conventional 18650 cells --- while maintaining their long life advantage.
Boston-Power's other product line, Swing, is designed primarily for use in transportation applications such as electric scooters, electric bikes and electric vehicles, as well as utility energy storage applications. Swing offers long life capabilities, with 1000 cycles at 100% depth of discharge and 2000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge. In addition, Swing features a high energy density -- at 420 Wh/L, approximately twice the density of today's lithium phosphate based cells.
"In the past 15 years, BMZ has designed about 2400 different battery packs for it more than 900 mostly European customers. This number is expected to increase to close to 2600 systems by the end of 2010. In terms of life, safety and environmental compatibility, the hitherto unique Sonata® and Swing(TM) cells from Boston-Power put us in the position of being able to offer the world's most intelligent and environmentally friendly mobile power solution," said Klaus Heck, sales manager at BMZ.
Martin Dluzansky, director partner marketing at Boston-Power, emphasized that BMZ's company philosophy perfectly complements Boston-Power's focus on the development and supply of new cuttingedge lithiumion technologies: "As one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of customerspecific, bestinclass battery solutions, Batterien-Montage-Zentrum enjoys an excellent reputation. We are very excited about the future cooperation with BMZ."
Boston-Power has recently been named by The Wall Street Journal a Top 10 Clean Technology Company in its "Next Big Thing" list of the top 50 venturefunded companies. At the beginning of this year, Boston-Power also received the prestigious 2010 Technology Pioneer Award at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.
