Graduates from the private training college of the Deutsches Erwachsenen-Bildungswerk (German Adult Education Centre) in Fellbach received their certifi-cates from principal Frank Hoppe on July 25. The newly qualified assistants in pharmaceutical engineering were joined by over twenty biotechnology assistants. The year's top graduate, Frank Hülsken, received a EUR 250 award from BioRe-gio STERN Management GmbH.

State-certified biotechnology assistants are trained in subjects such as chemistry, micro-biology and information technology and undergo numerous periods of laboratory study. The job opportunities for biotechnology assistants are many and varied due to the broad-based training they receive and extend from the pharmaceuticals industry, research insti-tutes, hospitals and medical laboratories to the cosmetics and foodstuffs industries.

Dr. Klaus Eichenberg, Managing Director of BioRegio STERN, honoured the year's best student during the certificate presentation ceremony. As well as his certificate, Frank Hülsken also took home a cheque for EUR 250 as a reward for his outstanding performance. The 24-year-old will shortly begin studies in bioanalytics or molecular biotechnology and is then likely to focus on detection methods for future drugs, for example.

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies need employees who have learned how to handle micro-organisms, cell cultures or biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. "It's important not only to train graduates at universities but also to promote vocational training intensively," said Eichenberg at the award ceremony.
