Bertrandt seizes market opportunities

Revenues up again in first half of fiscal 2015/2016

(PresseBox) (Ehningen, ) In the first half year the Bertrandt Group has used the business opportunities associated with intact trends. The engineering specialist has expanded its market position. Revenues rose to EUR 484.8 million. With operating profit of EUR 42.2 million and post-tax earnings of EUR 28.9 million Bertrandt contin-ues to deliver good performance. The Company pursued investing activities to the tune of EUR 44.3 million. Sustained growth is also reflected in an expanding workforce: as at 31 March 2016 the tech-nology group employed 12,663 engineers, technicians and commercial staff –804 more than in the previous year. Thanks to intact market drivers, Bertrandt is also confident of further potential for positive business development.

Technology trends provide basis for sustained growth and offer business opportunities for the future

The trends towards environmentally-friendly mobility, automated driving and greater variety of variants which are important for successful business development continued to play out in the period under review. Industry 4.0 is opening new perspectives in the technology sectors of energy, medical technology, electrical engineering, machinery and plant engineering. "We have identified potential for future growth in all these sectors," says Bertrandt AG CEO Dietmar Bichler. "In this context model diversity is proving just as important as connected vehicles, digitalisation and Industry 4.0." Experts forecast the market volume of web-based functions in connected vehicles rising worldwide in the next five years from a current EUR 40 billion to around EUR 126 billion. "What is more, the level of R&D generated by the German automotive industry, which is important for a development partner, remains at a constantly high level of over EUR 30 billion." One focus lies on the development of alternative drive technologies. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), German manufacturers have invested EUR 14 billion in electromobility alone in recent years. The Company has also identified opportunities for development work in sectors beyond the automotive industry.

Ongoing growth in a highly-competitive environment

Bertrandt was again able to grow in a strongly competitive market in which its business performance was influenced by three factors: Owing to a calendar effect the second quarter of the fiscal year was one working day shorter. Furthermore temporary shifts in demand for capacity occurred and increasing pressure on prices continued. In the first six months of 2015/2016 Bertrandt posted an increase in revenues of 7.4 percent up to EUR 484.8 million (previous year EUR 451.4 million). Growth took place across all segments –digital engineering, physical engineering and electrical systems/electronics. Operating profit was EUR 42.2 million (previous year EUR 43.8 million) equal to a margin of 8.7 percent (previous year 9.7 percent), while posttax earnings came to EUR 28.9 million (previous year EUR 29.9 million). Dietmar Bichler sees further potential for the technology group to continue developing in the years ahead. This positive assessment of the market is entirely independent of temporary fluctuation in revenues and earnings in particular quarterly periods. A broad strategic alignment and Bertrandt's solid financial base will continue to provide a stable foundation for future business growth.

Investments up by 30 percent

Modern infrastructure and technical expertise are important prerequisites for the successful completion of customer projects. At EUR 44.3 million, Bertrandt stepped up its investment in property, plant and equipment by more than 30 percent during the period under review (previous year EUR 34 million). The Technology Centre in Mönsheim is a good example of these major investments. Today, guests at the Capital Market Day were given the opportunity of visiting the new location shortly before its completion. A test centre and modern office buildings which cover all aspects of the development of future mobility have been erected on the 58,000 m2 area in recent years. Bertrandt also opened a new establishment in Regensburg on 1 March, which will enable it to provide customers in the vicinity with services relating to the trend topics of electromobility, automated driving as well as safety and security. Bertrandt also added to its range of electronics, exterior and interior development work for rail vehicles at its Berlin and Dresden locations.

With 804 new jobs, the workforce is also growing

Sustained growth in all trend topics is also reflected in an expanding workforce: As at the reporting date the Company employed 12,663 people. Since last year Bertrandt has proved attractive to 804 new enthusiastic colleagues (11,859 as at 31 March 2015). "Our specialists are developing solutions to go with these product and process innovations every single day." A job with Bertrandt is attractive for both people with experience and those just setting out on their careers. Increasing connectivity and digitalisation allow Bertrandt to offer challenging careers to graduates from classic automotive and mechanical engineering disciplines as well as to software and IT specialists.
