Bertrandt seizes market opportunities

Revenues and earnings develop positively in first quarter of 2015/2016

Ehningen, (PresseBox) - The Bertrandt Group made a promising start to the 2015/2016 fiscal year. The continuing productive launch of Bertrandt's investments generated positive revenue effects. In the first quarter of the year revenues were up to EUR 243.2 million (previous year EUR 219.8 million), equivalent to an increase of 10.6 percent. The operating profit grew by 12.1 percent to EUR 24.1 million (previous year EUR 21.5 million) while post-tax earnings were up to EUR 16.5 million (EUR 14.6 million). The engineering service provider also invested EUR 27.5 million in its infrastructure, 41.7 percent more than in the previous year. As at the reporting date the engineering specialist employed a workforce of 12,520. Altogether 849 new jobs were created year on year.

Technology industries seek cross-cutting engineering competence

Thanks to the high diversity of technologies and models the automotive industry is covering additional development volume in collaboration with external partners. These include complete vehicle engineering companies such as Bertrandt. "Our range of services provides custom-tailored solutions along the entire product engineering process for the key technology trends of environmentallyfriendly mobility solutions, safety and connectivity. The services we offer make us a reliable partner which is able to meet current and future challenges across all engineering project stages," is how CEO Dietmar Bichler describes this important factor in Bertrandt's success. A broad range of engineering know-how is also in demand in the sectors energy, medical, electrical engineering as well as machinery and plant engineering in response to current topics such as Industry 4.0, the energy transition, smart grid or the ageing society. Bertrandt has invested over EUR 186 million over the last three years to serve current market trends. Examples include the battery testing centre for assessing environmentally-friendly mobility solutions, the newly established testing centre in Mönsheim or the acoustics centres in Ingolstadt and Sassenburg, which serve all-round safety and comfort requirements.

Double-digit growth in revenue and earnings

Against this background Bertrandt was able to grow again up to the reporting date on 31 December 2015. Dietmar Bichler: "The expansion of business volume also reflects the productive launch of our investments." Revenues rose by 10.6 percent to EUR 243.2 million (previous year EUR 219.8 million). Operating profit went up to EUR 24.1 million (previous year EUR 21.5 million), equal to a margin of 9.9 percent (previous year 9.8 percent), while post-tax earnings rose to EUR 16.5 million (previous year EUR 14.6 million). Bertrandt also invested EUR 27.5 million in the company itself: a plus of 41.7 percent (previous year EUR 19.4 million). For example, Bertrandt recently expanded its technical testing equipment, adding a brake test stand, test systems for the protection of pedestrians and a climate chamber for aerospace. The issue of a bonded loan for EUR 200 million in November 2015 laid the groundwork for further long-term investment decisions. Despite the absolute increase in equity, the equity ratio dropped to 45.9 percent (previous year 62.0 percent) as a result of the stretched balance sheet.

Intact market trends continue to offer future growth opportunities

In Dietmar Bichler's view, the increasingly demands made by both consumers and lawmakers in all the technology sectors served by Bertrandt also offer considerable potential for the company. "We intend to secure and enhance our market position as a provider of engineering services and as a technology group." For this reason the company expects the volume of investment in the 2015/2016 fiscal year to again be higher than in the previous year.

Headcount continues to grow

Bertrandt continued to recruit new employees in the first quarter of the 2015/2016 fiscal year. As at 31 December 2015 the Group had 12,520 employees, a large proportion of whom are engineers, technicians or specialists who are also working in new fields, such as on ways of connecting the car with its environment. Bertrandt's headcount increased by 849 year on year (11,671 employees as at 31 December 2014).
