BayTech Venture Capital has made an undisclosed first round investment in Open-Xchange, a Tarrytown, NY-based vendor of Linux-based collaboration software. The company plans to use the funds to expand research and development and accelerate its marketing activities.

Open-Xchange Server 5 enables Smart Collaboration™ by providing mission critical collaborative functions like email, calendaring, contacts and task management, fully integrated with advanced features such as Smart Linking, Smart Permissions, document sharing, project tracking, user forums, and a knowledge base. Open-Xchange Server 5 works with the widest variety of browsers, mobile devices and ‘rich‘ clients such as Microsoft Outlook.

Launched in August 2004, Open-Xchange Server is one of the most active and fastest growing open source projects to date. The open source software tracking site,, ranks the Open-Xchange Server fourth out of
358 groupware projects. It is also ranked first among document repositories and fourth for handhelds devices. Overall, Open-Xchange’s products are ranked 165th out of 40,699 listed projects on the site.

The commercial edition of Open-Xchange Server became available in April 2005. Since then, it has been chosen by more than 2000 companies in 60 countries, ranging from organizations with a handful of users all the way to large enterprises with more than 7000 users. Demand is particularly strong in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the U.S. and France. To date, Open-Xchange has recruited nearly 300 value-added resellers in 57 countries.

“Clearly open source will gain a large share of the collaboration software market. The customer value proposition is too compelling,” says Dr. Jochen Walter, partner with BayTech Venture Capital. “With Open-Xchange, we’ve selected the clear category leader in open source collaboration.
Open-Xchange’s management and engineering team show great experience in open source development as well as in the collaboration software market. We are excited to support the growth of Open-Xchange.”

“Open-Xchange is committed to delivering the most feature rich, open source collaboration platform on the market,” said Frank Hoberg, CEO Open-Xchange Inc. “As we see more and more deployments in corporate environments, we are committed to meeting the needs of our customers. BayTech’s investment allows us to further expand support and sales activities as well as research and development on new technologies.”

Open-Xchange Server 5 supports the two leading Enterprise Linux distributions, Red Hat and SUSE. Innovative connectors called Oxtenders enhance customer flexibility, using open standard APIs to integrate existing IT infrastructures. These capabilities can also be extended to mobile devices, fax servers and Samba administration tools.

Open-Xchange Server was recently awarded the LinuxWorld Product Excellence Award and the ServerWatch Product Excellent Award, as well as being named InfoWeek’s Server Product of the Year, as well as a finalist in eWEEK's Sixth Annual Excellence Awards program.
