Cognis introduces Emgard RW-A lubricant for railways and trams

In rail-based transport, such as subways, trams and railways, the area of the wheel that is in contact with the track is typically only the size of a coin. This places enormous strain on final drive systems and axles, and as a result, manufacturers of rolling stock need high-performance lubricants for these components. Cognis Functional Products has developed a new full synthetic lubricant - Emgard RW-A SAE 75W-90 - to meet the demands of this highly specialized market. Having recently been approved by final drive manufacturer Voith Turbo and components supplier ZF Group, the new lubricant extends drain intervals, reduces oil disposal, and provides outstanding protection.

Emgard RW-A is a full synthetic gear and axle lubricant that offers extended drain intervals and improved wear protection in comparison to conventional petroleum-based fluids. It is designed for applications where heat and wear present major problems, including final gear drives, differentials and heavy-equipment transfer cases in trains and trams. Emgard RW-A contains extreme pressure additives plus rust, oxidation, and corrosion inhibitors to protect gears and bearings. Formulated from a full synthetic base stock with high viscosity and a low pour point, the full synthetic lubricant works well at both low and high temperatures, and has excellent cold flow properties. It forms a durable film with resistance to humidity, temperature variations and pollution, resulting in enhanced protection against steel and yellow metal corrosion, scuffing, pitting and micro-pitting.

Emgard RW-A has recently been approved by two German manufacturers, Voith Turbo and ZF Group, for use in their drive systems. To date, Voith Turbo has delivered a total of 70,000 single and double-stage final drives to state and privately owned railways in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. The ZF Group is a major producer of commercial vehicle and specialist drive line solutions.

"Emgard RW-A is an environmentally sound full synthetic axle fluid that offers rolling stock manufacturers superior protection, helping to reduce maintenance costs and downtime," says Jim Casey, Business Director Compounded Lubricants Cognis Corporation. "Its performance at both high and low temperatures exceeds that of conventional gear lubricants and it also extends drain intervals, resulting in less oil disposal. We are very pleased that the rail industry can now also benefit from all the advantages of our Emgard full synthetic lubricant range."

Emgard - compliance with the latest environmental and industrial standards Emgard is a range of fully synthetic, high-performance lubricants designed for both heavy-duty drive line and industrial applications. It includes custom-designed, fully formulated, ready-to-use solutions for gearboxes, transmissions and axle oils as well as full synthetic lubricants for medium and heavy-duty trucks. Because Emgard products have a lifecycle up to 5 times longer than conventional lubricants, maintenance intervals and component life are also extended, meaning that vehicles have less downtime and manufacturers can offer longer warranties. These products deliver consistent performance in all weather conditions, in temperatures from -40°C to 40°C (-40°F to 104°F), and their constant viscosity results in improved wear protection at low temperatures, reduced fuel consumption, and a lower horsepower loss. As well as delivering superior performance at a lower cost, the Emgard range is also environmentally sound and significantly reduces wastage and the amount of waste oil. Cognis full synthetic lubricants are designed with the OEMs for extreme performance applications. Cognis products are available for rebranding.
