Cognis at the CHEMISTRY 2009 exhibition in Moscow: "green" high-performance solutions for the agro, coatings and lubricants markets

At this year's CHEMISTRY exhibition in Moscow, specialty chemicals supplier Cognis presented its comprehensive range of products for the coatings, lubricants and agro markets. Among the latest solutions offered by Cognis in the German Pavilion section were "green" additives for paints and coatings manufacturers, high-performance lubricants for biohydraulic fluids, compressor and transmission oils, and environmentally sound surfactants and solvents for the crop protection industry. These solutions fit in with Cognis' innovative Greenovating concept, which supports manufacturers to satisfy the trend for products that are both sustainable and high-performing.

Specialty chemicals supplier Cognis has extensive expertise in nature-based chemistry, surfactant chemistry and surface technologies, and is leading the way in "green" chemistry for a range of industries. The company's Functional Products strategic business unit is dedicated to providing the crop protection, coatings and lubricants sectors with innovative and sustainable ingredients and formulations. These enable manufacturers to develop products that meet customers increased demands for environmentally friendly products and the more stringent regulations.

To demonstrate that sustainability and performance can match, and in many cases exceed, conventional solutions, Cognis has recently launched its innovative new Greenovating concept. Greenovating is Cognis' way of creating genuine "green" chemical solutions with quantifiable benefits in terms of application, efficiency, health, safety, toxicity, degradability and labeling. Cognis offers solutions that combine both environmental soundness and superior performance, giving manufacturers the competitive edge they need to succeed. As part of its Greenovating concept, Cognis showcased several new products for the coatings, lubricants and agro markets at this year's CHEMISTRY exhibition.

Coatings: a comprehensive "green" portfolio for various applications

Cognis presented its comprehensive portfolio of additives for paints and coatings, including defoamers, rheological additives, dispersing agents and coalescents. When developing this portfolio for the coatings market, Cognis took into account the active mechanisms and the way in which the different additives interact with each other, so that the individual products can be combined easily. This helps manufacturers to control the properties of paints and coatings. The latest product innovations from the additives portfolio on display included "green" defoamers and highly efficient rheology modifiers:

Dehydran SE 1 is a polymer emulsion defoamer for high-PVC water-based paints. It provides an alternative to mineral oil-based defoamers, and delivers excellent performance. Dehydran SE 1 is easy to handle, suitable for use in all types of paints, and offers excellent foam suppression. Derived from renewable resources, it is odor and VOC-free, and has an ultra-low content of semi-volatile organic compounds (S VOCs).

A new product for high-end paints in Cognis' defoamer range is Dehydran 2293. It offers superior defoaming performance and excellent long-term efficiency. It is a high performing product for high-gloss, highly pigmented systems and clear coatings. Dehydran 2293 is completely free of VOCs and solvents, and is therefore suitable for use in paints with pro-environmental labeling.

One of the new rheology modifiers is DSX 3291, an innovative associative thickener for "green" water-based coatings. DSX 3291 is an excellent pseudoplastic viscosity builder, and is up to five times more efficient than conventional products. It is easy to handle, can be incorporated into coating formulations with low shear power, and enables thick coatings to be easily sprayed. DSX 3291 is suitable for all types of paints, including premium flat and eggshell, semi-gloss and gloss coatings.

DSX 3100 is a highly efficient ICI builder that allows for reduction of KU-builder such as cellulose ethers. It is free of VOCs, odor, alkylphenolethoxylates (APEO), solvents and heavy metals. It imparts excellent gloss and color acceptance which makes it universally suitable for architectural and industrial applications.

Lubricants: high-performance solutions for biohydraulic fluids, compressor and heavy duty truck lubricants

Cognis Synlubes Technology provides a comprehensive range of high-performance components, additives, basestocks and fully formulated synthetic lubricants for lubricant manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and rebranders in markets where synthetic alternatives offer significant advantages over traditional mineral oil based products. The products presented at CHEMISTRY 2009 included new solutions for biohydraulic fluids, compressor and heavy duty truck lubricants:

The ProEco HE 801 series is a range of high-performance, biohydraulic fluids. With excellent low temperature performance, good seal compatibility, superior oxidative and hydrolytic stability, foam resistance and equipment protection, ProEco HE 801 offers extended drain intervals and is recommended for use in all environmentally sensitive areas. Based on patented renewable ester technology that is readily biodegradable, it meets or exceeds key national and global eco-standards including the EU Eco-label.

The Breox Compressor Lubricant range for compression of Ethylene and hydrocarbon gases offers significant performance and economic advantages over traditional mineral and white oils. The products exhibit reduced gas solubility, leading to improved wear performance, extended lubricant and compressor life and higher compressor efficiency.

The Emgard Manual Transmission and Emgard Axle Fluids are high-performance fully synthetic gear oils which have been specially developed to meet and exceed the requirements for heavy duty trucks. Approved for use by key truck manufacturers, these products offer excellent equipment protection, extended drain intervals and have been proven to provide fuel economy improvements of more than one percent in both field and laboratory tests.

Agro: "green" innovations for crop protection

Cognis' environmentally sound surfactants and "green" solvents for the crop protection market are based on natural renewable raw materials and enable the formulation of environmentally safe and highly efficient products for crop protection.

Cognis' Agnique BL surfactants series has been designed to meet the demand for a high-performance potentiator that is easy to use and formulate around Glyphosate derivatives. It is based on "green" and sustainable chemistry using environmentally sound materials that are safe to handle. This allows the formulation of label-free Glyphosate blends, providing a high-performance alternative to tallow-amine based products that currently carry a 'harmful' label. Agnique BL 3075, 3080, 3085 and 3090 have been designed according to compatibility and bioperformance linked to the different types of glyphosate salts. As the Agnique BL series is largely based on renewable raw materials and can significantly reduce dosage levels of glyphosate.
