European architects: almost back on track in the first quarter of 2010?

MA Rotterdam, (PresseBox) - For European architects, 2009 was far from being an ordinary year: It was dominated by the large shadow of the crisis, decreasing backlogs and shrinking turnover expectations. However, the situation for Western European architects seems now much more secure than one year before. This is shown by current results of the Architectural Barometer, a research project carried out by Arch-Vision for the fifth time since 2009, measuring cyclical developments among architects to establish a comparable indicator for construction market developments in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

In all countries, the backlog has developed slightly negative compared to the first quarter 2009. However, in the Netherlands, as well as in Italy, France and the UK, the backlog development is less negative than in the fourth quarter of 2009. In Germany, the backlog development declined slightly compared to the previous quarter. In comparison to the first quarter of 2009, the backlog development is still the most negative in Spain.

Turnover expectations

The Spanish architects are also left behind by their European colleagues in their turnover expectations: In the fourth quarter of 2009, Spanish architects had become less negative concerning their future turnover than in the quarters before. But in the first quarter of 2010, their expectations fell back.

In all other countries, architects expect a positive turnover development during the next 12 months, most notably in the United Kingdom and Germany for the third time in a row. However, only Italy and the Netherlands show a positive trend compared to expectations in the forth quarter of 2009. German architects, although still holding the second position, have somewhat dimmed their positive expectations.
