Elastomer and thermoplastic combination

Automation solution with electric Allrounder 470 A at the IRC 2009 in Nuremberg / Two-component machine with Multilift V robotic system

(PresseBox) (Loßburg, ) In the context of the International Rubber Conference (IRC) trade fair to be held from 29 June to 2 July 2009 in Nuremberg, Arburg will demonstrate its competence in the field of multi-component injection moulding at stand no. 207 in Hall 12. An automation solution built around an energy-efficient electric Allrounder 470 A with two horizontally-mounted injection units in an L configuration and a vertical Multilift V robotic system will be presented.

"For Arburg as a manufacturer of premium injection moulding machines, the IRC offers the ideal platform for entering into direct contact with rubber producers. With our two-component Allrounder 470 A, we will be presenting a machine that is able to process elastomer and thermoplastic with a high degree of automation," explains Eberhard Lutz, Arburg Area Sales Manager Germany in the run-up to the IRC.

Perfect hard-soft combination

In order to manufacture the moulded parts precisely and energy-efficiently, the selected combination comprises an electric Allrounder 470 A with a clamping force of 1,000 kN, equipped for elastomer processing and with two injection units (size 400 and 170), in conjunction with a vertical Multilift V robotic system. The larger of the two units operates conventionally, injecting horizontally through the fixed platen, while the smaller one, in an L position, injects centrally into the parting line from the rear of the machine. The size 400 injection unit is responsible for processing the thermoplastic and the size 170 unit, featuring elastomer equipment, for the final injection of the soft component. A coolant pipe with three integrated seals will be produced from elastomer.

The Multilift V used for turning the pre-moulded parts in the mould and for removing and setting down the finished parts on a conveyor belt is positioned above the machine and enters the mould vertically.

Alldrive machine series: precise and energy efficient

The electric Allrounder A machines are characterised by their precision, speed and energy efficiency. The main axes, with servo-electric drive as standard, enable simultaneous movements and consequently short cycle times. Depending on requirements, the auxiliary axes can either be driven electrically like the main axes, or hydraulically by means of an integrated small-accumulator hydraulic system. A further advantage of these electric machines is their low energy consumption. Accordingly, the Alldrive machines all bear the Arburg "e2" energy-efficiency label. Precision and energy-efficient operation are the main priorities in elastomer processing.

Trend towards automation solutions

Eberhard Lutz points out the significance of the exhibit for the rubber market: "With the application on show at the trade fair, Arburg will highlight its competency in the field of elastomer processing, multi-component injection moulding and automation. Automation solutions with integrated production steps for the cost-efficient production of complex moulded parts, have become a permanent feature in the field of injection moulding. In particular for the German market, the demand for energy-optimised and precise machine technology is growing. These requirements are particularly well satisfied by the electric Allrounders, as their modular design allows them be equipped to suit individual applications such as multi-component or elastomer injection moulding."

Arburg, a German machine construction company, is one of the leading global manufacturers of injection moulding machines for plastics processing with clamping forces between 125 kN and 5,000 kN. Fields of application include the production of plastic parts for motor vehicles, communications and consumer electronics, medical technology, domestic appliances and packaging. The product range is completed by robotic systems, complex projects and other peripherals. Arburg's operations are coordinated by an integrated management system and are DIN EN ISO 9001 and 14001 certified. Arburg is represented by its own organisations in 24 countries at 32 locations and by trading partners in more than 50 countries. However, production takes place exclusively in the parent factory in Lossburg (Germany) - with the mark of quality "made by Arburg - made in Germany". From a total of more than 2,000 Arburg employees, around 1,700 work in Germany. About 330 further employees work in Arburg's organisations around the world.
