Den einfachen und schnellen Datenaustausch zwischen Anwendungen unterschiedlichster Hersteller in der Automatisierungstechnik ermöglicht die standardisierte Schnittstelle OPC (Open Platform Communications). Die aktuelle Generation ist OPC-UA; UA steht für Unified Architecture.
Der Aufwand, den die Anpassung der zahlreichen Herstellerstandards auf individuelle Steuerungs- und Überwachungs-Infrastrukturen verursacht, wird mit OPC-UA minimiert. OPC-UA ist als industrielles M2M-Kommunikationsprotokoll, mit den Fähigkeiten Maschinendaten (Regelgrößen, Messwerte, Parameter usw.) zu transportieren und maschinenlesbar semantisch zu beschreiben, anzusehen und vereint verschiedene Ansätze der Kommunikations-Referenz RAMI4.0 (Reference Architecture Model Industrie 4.0).

Die modular aufgebauten VPN-Fernwartungsrouter der Serie eWON Flexy können als OPC-UA-Server eingesetzt werden. Ein OPC-UA-Client (z. B. SCADA-System, HMI, Smartphone APP) kann den Server im eWON Flexy-Router über LAN, WAN oder die VPN-Schnittstelle ansprechen. Der Client kann sich dabei im lokalen Netzwerk oder in einem entfernten Netzwerk - erreichbar z. B. über das Internet - befinden. Der eWON Flexy-VPN-Router stellt dem OPC-Client die Daten, der über Ethernet, MPI oder seriell angeschlossenen Geräte (z. B. SPS, HMI, Sensoren), bereit.
