Within only one year Vossloh Kiepe has succeeded in reducing its emission of CO₂ by 70.4 tons/year and in reducing its costs by 30,000 euros by optimising processes and by realising simple behaviour modifications and adaptations!
ÖKOPROFIT® is a cooperative approach between the local authority, local companies as well as regional and supra-regional partners. The concept combines yield with ecological benefit and is a recognised instrument to e.g. improve climate protection in companies and public institutions.
Stefan Müller, environmental management officer with Vossloh Kiepe, is very satisfied with the result of the ÖKOPROFIT® project:
"The project was initiated in February 2014 and aimed at permanently reducing our overheads and our emission of CO₂, and we have succeeded far beyond our expectations. Ecological awareness has always been very high with Vossloh Kiepe. We develop and manufacture environmentally friendly electric traction equipment for public transport vehicles on our premises in Düsseldorf-Hassels. Therefore, we also made every effort concerning environmental protection earlier of our own free will, and since 2000 we have acted in accordance with the certified environmental management system EN ISO 14001. We wanted to develop our environmental commitment professionally with our participation in the ÖKOPROFIT® programme and have been able to realise many ideas within this one year, but, of course, we shall continue to look for further improvement potentials."
The present success was mainly achieved with the help of the employees of Vossloh Kiepe, who took up and realised the very different modification proposals with great commitment. Thus, e.g. an exhaust system was always switched off during breaks. This simple push of a button saved about 1 000 euros because the power consumption was reduced by 5 500 kWh. Moreover, the water heating in the social and sanitary areas was adjusted by setting the under-sink water heaters to 35 °C, which reduced the costs by about 4 500 euros per year.
Measures like the stepwise modernisation and adaptation of the lighting to the actual need, which have been initiated and will be concluded in the next few months, will probably save about 17 500 euros.
Moreover, the heating systems, the light in the halls and the waste disposal are going to be optimised.
