Alle zwei Jahre lässt das Handelsblatt alle Studien erfassen, die Forscher, die aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz stammen oder dort forschen, in den wichtigsten Fachjournalen der BWL publiziert haben - und kürt damit die forschungsstärksten Betriebswirte. Die Datenarbeit übernimmt dabei ein renommiertes Forscherteam der ETH Zürich. Insgesamt werden dabei weit über 2000 Forscher und mehr als 1000 Journale berücksichtigt. Sie kommen aus allen Teildisziplinen der BWL - vom Rechnungswesen bis zur Managementlehre.
Neben dem Ranking der aktuellen Forschungsleistung veröffentlicht das Handelsblatt auch eine Rangliste für das Lebenswerk der Forscher, bei der sämtliche Veröffentlichungen berücksichtigt werden, die ein Forscher in seiner Karriere in bekannten Journalen platzieren konnte. Hier steht - wie vor zwei Jahren - Franz Wirl von der Uni Wien vorne. Die dritte Kategorie, "Forscher unter 40 Jahren", wird in diesem Jahr angeführt von Franz Kellermanns, der derzeit an der University of North Carolina in den USA arbeitet.
