Am 9. September 2016 wurde TOPTICAs Guide Star Laser SodiumStar 20/2 mit dem dritten Preis des Laser-Forschungs- Innovationspreises der Berthold-Leibinger-Stiftung ausgezeichnet. Die „Guide Star Allianz", bestehend aus TOPTICA Photonics AG (Deutschland), MPB Communications Inc. (Kanada) und dem European Southern Observatory (ESO), entwickelte über einen Zeitraum von mehr als sieben Jahren ein neuartiges Lasersystem zur Erzeugung von künstlichen Leitsternen für das Very Large Telescope (VLT) und andere große Teleskope. Diese Technologie füllt eine wichtige Lücke und ist entscheidend für die Realisierung von modernen adaptiven Teleskopen. Sie wird zu einer grundlegenden Verbesserung in der Performance, Verlässlichkeit und Wartung solcher Systeme führen.
