Ein Retro-Feature ist der Videotext. Trotzdem wird er noch gerne verwendet. Über den Videotext lässt sich aber nicht nur das aktuelle Fernsehprogramm abrufen, sondern auch Nachrichten, das Wetter und vieles mehr. "Auf neuen Fernsehern kommt zum Videotext noch ein sogenannter 'EPG' (Electronic Program Guide) zum Einsatz. Die Fernsehsendungen kommen heutzutage über verschiedene Wege auf das Gerät. Viele Modelle haben inzwischen die Empfänger direkt integriert, welche dann zum Beispiel DVB-C, DVB-S, DVB-T oder DVB-T2 verarbeiten.
Trautmann sagt: "DVB steht allgemein für einen digitalen Zugang - wobei ein C für Cable, ein S für Satellit, ein T für terrestrisch (ein auslaufender Standard) und T2 (für die kommende Generation des terrestrischen Empfangs) steht." Smart-TVs können zudem mit dem Internet verbunden werden und bieten neben einem nutzbaren Browser auch einige TV-Apps. Diese führen beispielsweise zu Netzwerken wie Facebook, Online-Video-Plattformen wie YouTube und Online-Videotheken wie maxdome oder Zattoo. Welche Anwendungen auf dem Smart-TV verfügbar sind, kann von Anbieter zu Anbieter unterschiedlich sein.
