Glenn Coldenhoff continued to look fast for Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe by fighting hard at the Grand Prix of Europe at the Loket circuit where he classified eighth overall despite a second moto crash.
At the 13th round of 18 in the FIM Motocross World Championship, 24,000 spectators enjoyed blue skies and found space around the steep hillside outside of the historic town close to the German border. In the MX2 class Jeremy Seewer steered his RM-Z250 to eighth overall as the Swiss also suffered a rendezvous with the hard-pack Loket soil.
Coldenhoff, who claimed a sensational victory two weeks ago at the Grand Prix of Czech Republic, snared the holeshot on Saturday and claimed a decent third position in the gate - as Suzuki's top representative - for Sunday's motos. He could not manage a similar getaway in the first moto. In fact the reverse and had to plough a course from the rear of the pack to the fringes of the top-10 in the formative stages. He then embarked on a tough battle with Tommy Searle, which he won, and was close to catching Gautier Paulin to score seventh place.
In the second moto he started better and made the top-six in the opening laps. Holding eighth place again Coldenhoff was working to catch Paulin once more when he became cross-rutted exiting a corner and crashed, taking the impact on his head and neck. Coldenhoff bravely remounted and finished the race in 11th and now sits ninth in the world championship table.
In MX2 Seewer was part of a tussle for third position amongst a group of four other riders and was desperately unlucky not to avoid Tim Gajser who crashed just in front of him. Seewer was sent tumbling down the track and although he was able to restart and was thankfully unhurt he could rise no higher than 11th. A busy second moto saw the 21 year old as part of a six-rider freight train disputing third position. The group was close and the tension was high but hardly anybody could force a valid overtaking move and he reached the flag in seventh.
Jeffrey Herlings' accident and dislocated hip during Saturday's Qualification Heat means that the MX2 championship dispute is now 'open season' and Seewer is right at the heart of the battle. The '#91' holds sixth and just 30 points from the top.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe will move close to its base of operations this week as the sand of Lommel gets ready for the Grand Prix of Belgium.
Glenn Coldenhoff:
"Yesterday I had a good feeling, got the holeshot but then rode a little bit too tight in the qualifying heat. My start was horrible in the first moto and I was third-last into the first corner - you know then that it is going to be a hard moto! I managed to pass a lot of guys on the first lap and came over the line in 14th. My riding was OK and I felt pretty good out there to finish eighth. I had a better start in the second moto but the feeling wasn't there. The track was really rough and sketchy. I was eighth again and following Paulin. He was faster than me in some places so I tried his lines but got cross-rutted and went down pretty hard. I hurt my neck and have a headache. The results were OK but we are looking for more, for sure. In the end I don't have a big injury and we'll train somewhere in the sand this week and hope to be strong at Lommel."
Jeremy Seewer:
"I was unlucky today. I could not avoid Gajser in the first moto and although I could get back up the race was ruined because the bike was damaged and the front brake was broken. The second moto was better and there were so many of us together it seemed. A shame today and I hope I can do better in the next few races. I have trained a lot in the sand so I hope it will pay off at Lommel."
