Siempelkamp manufactures a new straightening press for heavy plates

6,500 t perfectly controlled within 0.2 mm

(PresseBox) (Krefeld/Germany, ) AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke ordered by Siempelkamp a new heavy-plate straightening press for the rolling mill plant II. With a maximum force of 65 MN (6.500 t) the press will be designed for heavy plates up to 300 mm thickness. Delivery is scheduled for July 2009, commissioning will take place in November 2009.

A continuously increasing demand of even thicker plates of high strength steels can be observed on the market of heavy plates. To meet the customer's requirements also in the future Dillinger Hütte ordered by Siempelkamp a new straightening press. The new press is designed for plates of materials with a tensile strength up to 1,200 N/mm² and thickness between 50 and 300 mm.

The press is used for straightening plates having a width varying from 1,000 to 5,200 mm and a length between 1,500 and 19,000 mm which may weigh up to 60 t. The material temperature during straightening process can reach 600 °C.

The press is equipped with two cross-moving straightening punches located in the upper beam each with a press force of 32.5 MN, the cylinders of them are controlled servo-hydraulically. When both cylinders are coupled the press can also work with a straightening die thus reaching a straightening force of 65 MN. The maximal straightening force can be applied up to the plate edges, right up to 2,600 mm out of centre line.

A stroke accuracy of +/- 0.2 mm enables a precise straightening of the plates. Norbert Scholz, Head of Department Metal Forming at Siempelkamp, feels confident that the press fulfils the high accuracy requirements: "The new press allows our customer to supply high straightened plates surpassing the criteria of planeness as defined by the EN 10029 tolerances in the plane, class S. At Dillingen facilities two dishing presses (22.5 and 25 MN) supplied by Siempelkamp approx. 40 years ago are still used. The Saarlander would not have ordered by us if not satisfied with the two existing presses".

Siempelkamp will supply the new press as a complete plant including assembly and commissioning. Production start will be supported by a specialist for straightening process of Siempelkamp. Auxiliary devices such as handling, lifting, lowering and transport of the plates are also part of the scope of supply. Siempelkamp also designs and manufactures the complete oil-hydraulic and electronic control of the straightening plant.
