ElringKlinger AG to partner with Sensor-Technik Wiedemann GmbH

(PresseBox) (Dettingen/Erms, Kaufbeuren, )
ElringKlinger AG and Kaufbeuren-based Sensor-Technik Wiedemann GmbH (STW) have agreed to collaborate on the development and manufacture of lithium-ion battery modules and systems. The companies will be unveiling their first products at the 2016 HANNOVER MESSE.

The partnership agreement between the two companies was signed by Armin Diez, Head of Battery Technology and E-Mobility at ElringKlinger and STW Managing Director Sonja Wiedemann. The cooperation is primarily geared toward pooling expertise, including in highly automated manufacture, signal and high-voltage contact technology, and precision metrology for voltages, temperatures, and electrical currents. It will also bring to bear development expertise in line with the latest automotive standards and for functionally safe control systems as well as know-how in software development, battery management systems, cooling, and housings. “With automated manufacture and a high degree of vertical integration for all key components, the partnership will put us in an excellent competitive position,” explains Jan Groshert, Development Manager in the Battery Technology and E-Mobility division at ElringKlinger.

The first products to be born out of the partnership are battery modules with optional cooling and integrated electronic cell monitoring for 24- and 48-volt applications, or up to 1,000 volts in series. A standardized ElringKlinger battery module kit comprising battery modules and a battery management system from STW’s reputable mBMS range is also in the process of being put together. In addition, there are plans to produce standardized battery systems for voltage levels between 24 and 1,000 V. All products are to be manufactured in accordance with the prevailing standards in the automotive industry.

The products are to be used in stationary accumulator systems, forklifts, electrified road and commercial vehicles, and mobile machinery as well as in maritime applications and e-scooters. “We believe that our products can deliver real benefits, especially to vehicle manufacturers and integrators of battery modules and systems,” Groshert says. With this in mind, both companies are aiming to create a steadily expanding range of products for battery modules and systems based on lithium-ion cells. “Our customers will get complete storage solutions of an unrivaled quality. The fact that all the necessary key components will be produced by ElringKlinger and STW means we’ll be able to offer customized solutions,” promises Dr. Michael P. Schmitt, Managing Director at STW GmbH.

The two companies will be showcasing their expertise at the 2016 HANNOVER MESSE. Visitors to the trade show will be able to quiz ElringKlinger at Booth F60 in Hall 27, “Generation, Storage, and Mobility,” while Sensor-Technik Wiedemann GmbH will be on hand to answer any questions at Booth C16 in Hall 13.
