Cooperation agreement with Shimadzu

Gebr. Schmid and Shimadzu Corporation (Japan) reach strategic cooperation agreement.

(PresseBox) (Freudenstadt, ) Gebr. Schmid, a systems manufacturer and process provider based in Freudenstadt Germany, and the Shimadzu Corporation of Japan, a specialist in PECVD coating units, have reached a strategic cooperation agreement in key areas. The agreement was concluded in August. Integrating the Shimadzu PECVD coating units into the photovoltaic process chain will enable Schmid to continue to optimize key process parameters in turnkey equipment, including the reproducibility and constancy of results and the scrap rate. In addition, the collaboration paves the way for the development of new cell concepts. The cooperation agreement with Schmid will substantially expand Shimadzu's marketing base. Schmid will assume the exclusive global marketing of Shimadzu's turnkey-project integrated systems. An agreement on exclusive distribution rights for Shimadzu individual equipment was reached for Europe and much of Asia.

Shimadzu Corporation was founded in 1875 and is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Shimadzu has more than 9,000 employees worldwide and a sales volume of some 1.9 billion Euros. In Japan, Shimadzu is one of the leading enterprises in the flat panel display and semiconductor sectors. The Shimadzu PECVD technology (for coating solar wafers with blue silicon nitride) achieves particularly even and high-quality results, which results in improved cell efficiency.

Solar/Photovoltaics, Printed Circuit Boards and Flat Panel Display:
Quality and Innovation out of Tradition

Gebr. Schmid was founded in 1864 in Freudenstadt, Germany, as an iron foundry and mechanical workshop. For almost 100 years Schmid manufactured machines for the wood-working industry. Since 1965 brushing machines for the printed circuit board industry added to the portfolio; 10 years later woodworking machines ceased to be manufactured by Gebr. Schmid.
The following years were marked by continuous innovation and expansion, mainly focussed on the demands of the printed circuit board industry. In 1998 with production of the first systems for the flat panel display sector the Schmid cleanroom went into operation.
Since 2001 Schmid´s new business field, photovoltaic, is a big success story worldwide. Schmid delivers— meanwhile as world market leader in this segment—production equipment for wafers, cells and modules.
