International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its predictions for the European software industry and social, big data, and consumerization of IT will all leave their footprint on the industry, which will experience moderate growth of 3.1% in 2012.
"New versions of salesforce automation and customer service applications will feature new social capabilities such as discussion forums, activity streams, follow or subscribe capability, external feeds, alerts, and so on," said Bo Lykkegaard, program manager, European Enterprise Applications. "Other enterprise applications, such as business analytics and human capital management applications will be quick to follow but CRM will lead the way."
Hand in hand with social in the enterprise is the consumerization of IT, which sees employees demanding to use their own devices on enterprise networks. This goes against the common IT best practice of standardization of IT assets and processes and opening up new management and security risks.
"In order to regain control of this diverse set of mobile devices, IT managers will need to invest in mobile device management and mobile application management tools," said Carla Arend, program manager, European Infrastructure Software. "This will ensure an excellent user experience across a diverse set of devices, to reduce security risks from unmanaged devices and to contain operational cost through a solid and efficient management framework based on policies." In 2012, IDC expects that organizations will turn to cloud-based solutions as a fast and easy way to get mobile device management, mobile application management and mobile data management under control.
Last year, IDC predicted that big data would push the limits of data management. This year we believe that 2012 will be the year for the big data road map. The four-v definition - loosely defined as high volume, high variety, high velocity and thus high value data - is now widely understood and accepted. However, defining what exactly constitutes big data is challenging. "In addition to looking at specific data volumes, rates of increase, and speed, IDC defines big data at a high level as relating to both the new and the old - doing what you could never dream of doing, from data you could not access - and doing what you always tried to do but found it too difficult," said Alys Woodward, program manager, European Business Analytics, Enterprise Collaboration and Social Solutions. "There is a natural tension between the old and the new in enterprise software. In order to support both the existing data warehouse and the new opportunities of big data, organizations will create reference architectures that connect big data and data warehouses, in order to analyze new data and speed up processing, without risking the hard-won trust and reliability of the existing decision-making infrastructure."
